Well I still watch now and again, still raise the odd smile, but if ever a format was going through the motions its this. Hislop and Merton have been there so long I would imagine they have to be surgically removed from it at the end of each series. All the zest, exuberance and bite has long since been replaced by Horlicks and a seemingly endless list of smug comedians. Not appointment viewing anymore imo.

If a new fresher format came along, it'd be immediately dismissed as being not as good as HIGNFY and probably wouldn't last more than one series, so this tired version of HIGNFY with phoned in performances is as good as we will get.

Probably not, but thanks anyway! Maybe it would mean more to people in the US.
Probably the best known UK reference would be when Ralf Little left Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps In the first episode after he left they killed his character off off camera literally jumping a shark, which then ate him. The episode called When Jonny met Sharky. A nod to the audience that they knew they were pushing it too far |

Though American in origin it crept into British usage quite a while ago. It's used to death on this forum- it crops up constantly

Humor is weird, i've heard sexist, ageist and homophobic stuff on this show but if you can wrap it up as a joke you can get away with it.

HIGNFY is satire and that covers every spectrum. Everything is considered fair game. It's what people like to laugh about because normal people have long been peed off at being told what they can or cannot laugh at.

Sigh. Can we just put a ban on the same people making the same observations constantly?
It's always the same: Paul and/or Ian aren't funny anymore. Female host is rubbish Female comedian is rubbish Any female guest at all is rubbish Most comedians are rubbish It's gone on too long now They're making fun of the people I vote for, they're biased! They should never have got rid of Angus etc etc. Get over it. It's been going 25 years and rates incredibly well still. The BBC won't get rid of it because a) it fills their PSB remit, b) because of the revolving guest host it's quite cheap to make, c) a revolving guest means it feels fresh each week and d) the majority of people still find it funny. Accept you are in the minority. |

By "normal", do you mean sexist, racist or homophobic people?

Accept you are in the minority. Ian Hislop especially needs to go. He's just too bitter and twisted. 25 odd years of moaning and whining has corroded his soul. When John Prescott hit back at Hislop when Hislop dragged up some affair that happened 10-20 years ago (yawn, yawn), twitter lit up with cheers supporting Prescott for having a go back. And Hislop soon shut up too. People are bored with Hislop, but he has a Jeremy Corbyn-esque militant supporter group that sycophantically support him online, which makes him seem more popular than he is. The programme is good with him in it...but the show needs a makeover to make it better. I remember that people said QI wouldn't be able to continue without Stephen Fry....Then he left (he did the dignified thing, after 13 years), and as soon as they announced Sandi Toksvig was taking over, it was like...'Stephen who?' |

How do you figure that one then? She was well into her thirties with nearly 20 years of experience as a journalist, columnist, performer, and playwright, before she was given any kind of look in with the Beeb. Funny kind of nepotism even if I could think of anyone in her family that had anything like sufficient sway to guarantee anything. The BBC have always supported the children of famous parents/uncles/aunts. It might not be done in a sinister, conspiratorial way, but its part of the DNA at the BBC. |

She may be a genius, but the facts remain. Mummy and Daddy made it all happen for her. She doesn't even deny it. What she does say is that she made the most of the opportunities. But mummy and daddy made it happen. The Coren family are all over the BBC, and from there, they spread outwards.

No mention of 'racism' in the post i replied to so i can see you've just stuck that in for a spot of mischief making. The three subjects the poster mentioned is imo, open to satirical comment or humour such as Ruth Davidsons response, "are you absolutely sure you want two short-haired, flat shoes, shovel-faced lesbians" comment as an example.

So you want to ban free speech, Why? And isn't your counter argument also overly repeated ad nauseam too?

People are bored with Hislop? Since when? Everyone I see talking about HIGNFY seems to like him. As for the Prescott thing. Well yes, he was bringing up the past, but Prescott had only been on once before and since he was out to pimp Ed Miliband, Ian rightly brought up the facts - e.g. why should they listen to a Blairite etc? As for Stephen Fry, he had to leave because he had been offered a role on American TV on a Sitcom (basically the holy grail) and couldn't make the schedule for QI work. Nobody has seen a Sandi Toksvig episode yet, soit's impossible to say if she's a good replacement. |

I'd love to hear Henning speaking in German, just to see if he has that incredibly peculiar accent when speaking in his native language.

On "Live from the Apollo" he engaged with another German guy in the audience for about a minute. It might be on catch-up or YouTube.

I wasn't here last week and there were no comments. Was it that bad?
On tonight's show: David Mitchel hosts with Rose Matafeo on Ian's team and Chris Bryant MP on Paul's. David Mitchell's 13th appearance, last one series 50. Rose Matafeo's 1st appearance. Chris Bryant's 1st appearance. Enjoy the show
