Don't be so daft - I'm not trying to erase gender. But to expect a firm to advise you in advance whether they are sending a male or female engineer is plainly ridiculous.

The trend toward the removal of gender specific titles long predates concerns with political correctness or feminist sensitivities. The use of sculptress has been in decline since the '40s, authoress since the '50s, the 1850s that is! That's the pragmatism of language development not some hideous political campaign to corrupt and neuter English as we know it.”

There was a discussion on the radio recently about receptionists at medical practices. Several said that if someone wished they could make an appointment without giving possible embarrassing details so I presume they could specify they would like to see doctor of the same sex.

I have used opticians regularly most of my life and never been asked to remove any clothes etc, even for an eye operation I only to swap my shirt for their smock (in private). I can't a bus driver or conductor ever doing anything where their sex might be important.

The OED appears to have quite a number of references to the use of 'authoress' after 1850.

Evening all. Just bumping the thread. Everyone's favourite Andy Hamilton on tonight.

Excellent episode. Best of the series so far. Paul's always lively when his mates are on. VCM should be permanent host in my opinion.

First couple of minutes took the Question Time element to a new extreme, where Paul had to interject to remind Ian that it's actually a comedy panel show.

The very light ripple of applause showed that the studio audience were more Remainers than Brexiters.

I agree.

But would you also agree after that it was very good?

I think Paul's comment was more aimed at the **** beside Ian (didn't catch his name).

Tim Loughton. I thought he was good for a politician.

But it was left in the edit so the producer must have wanted it to be in the programme, they could have easily skipped it.

I thought it was hilarious tonight, with Merton in particular being on top form (nice shirt by the way).

Shouldn't really compare them, but I didn't even bother to record WILTY tonight. I've found that it's becoming a bit laboured now and I'd rather just watch half an hour of Lee Mack and David Mitchell taking the piss out of each other.

Andy Hamilton was bloody brilliant!!! He also brings out more humour in Paul Merton 😁 I was in stitches "this machine doesn't recognise your face, as a face..."
Victoria the consummate panel game presenter.
Wholly excellent fun from start to finish.

Must be funny to have a husband and wife both presenting the same panel show.

"Are you hosting HIGNFY tonight, darling?" "No I did it last week; it must be your turn. And don't forget next week we're both on WILTY, we'll need a babysitter.".

They'd have recorded Citizen Khan. Now that's really not funny.

Great episode. Things always perk up when Andy Hamilton is on, and Victoria Coren-Mitchell suits the programme very well. Even the MP was quite good value. Paul was very quick when said MP (a Leadsom cheerleader) mentioned "Mother Theresa"; "I thought the point was she isn't a mother?"

You mean you missed the world's longest pregnancy on Only Connect last year?

Yes it was an excellent episode though as soon as i saw Hamilton was on i just knew it would be as he never fails to deliver! He's a natural for the show. Coren-Mitchell always presents it well and imo would make a good regular. Yes the MP chap entered into the spirit of things, especially after getting an early bashing from Ian too!

Great episode.

This got off to a very awkward start as you could see Ian thinking 'why am I lumbered with this moron?' but it got much funnier as it went on- Good episode imo

That sounds like a typical comment from one of the right-wingers on the Politics forum.

Best episode - so far - of a very good series. As a 'loony lefty' I don't like myself much for saying this but the Tory MP is far and away the funniest they've had on the show. He was great in his last outing too when Kathy Burke hosted.
As others have said Andy Hamilton is always good value. Managing to walk that fine line between being genuinely funny and not thinking it's all about him. Unlike, say, Reginald D Hunter. He usually seems to bring out the best in Paul too.
The fridge/toilet story I thought was genuinely hilarious.
Funniest moment; 'Which out of touch, loony, lefty' 'Prince Philip.'
