I think Smith and Tennant look back on it with good memories. They made good friends and loved it. But at the time, it must have been quite hard work. As Alex Kingston said yesterday, the Doctor is in every scene, every day for about 10 months a year, with an awful lot of lines to learn for every episode outside of filming time. You can't really do anything else but Who. At the time, it must have been quite exhausting. After a bit of time out, you probably forget how exhausting, and just remember how great it was!

I think retrospectively it's easy to remember what you enjoyed about it, and nostalgically say 'I wish I'd stay longer'. In reality though, they all had reasons to leave at the time.

Eccleston, obviously had various issues with some of the people working on the show at the time.

Tennant never particularly wanted to leave, but said that if he didn't do it at some point he'd end up never being able to, and they'd be 'wheeling him out in his bathchair' and hence decided to go out on a high, with his huge popularity still fully intact.

Smith seemed to want to move on to bigger and better things, and had even done a film whilst before his time as the Doctor officially was over.

With Matt Smith, it does make me think that he's saying this at the moment, because he probably thought being in hollywood films would make him a big star in his own right, known for more than just playing the doctor, but so far he hasn't really had any huge starring roles, and I don't know of any films he's been in that have been huge hits, so thats probably why, for the moment at least, he's remembering how much fame he had as the current doctor, and thinking 'maybe i should have stayed longer'

Smith seems to turn loads of stuff down apparently. Mainstream stuff like Hamlet to do obscure things, so I'm not sure he is a fame hunter particularly. It is hugely frustrating because I like him as an actor and would like to see him in more stuff. The Crown is the most expensive TV series ever made apparently and has a real buzz about it, so hopefully he'll be able to break into the mainstream after that.

I think its the old tale of "Not knowing what you had till its gone." and Nostalgia

When they first became The faces of Doctor Who they probably loved every second of it, I know David was a massive fanboy on set, but as with anything nothing lasts forever, like David said doing the same old thing again and again gets tiring and its because he loves Doctor Who and doesn't want it to be something he looks at with sigh and hate, he left because he had to or else it would've been "Urgh not The Daleks again" so is best that he got out when he did. Even though he was a popular Doctor eventually his hype would've died down if he was still playing the role.

Same with Christopher in a lot of his interviews from 2005 he seems to talk about having virtually no life for 9 months and non-stop filming just Doctor Who, although from behind the scenes filming of Series 1 it looked like Chris and Billie were having a blast doing it at the same time, but eventually it would take its toll.

They have nostalgia goggles its easy to remember the good times but not the bad so they look back at it with wonder, filming all over, having fun in the TARDIS, seeing their faces on Merchandise and advertising and meeting so many guest actors, kinda like how some people wish they were a kid again because of all the fun things they did.

However I'm sure a lot of them even though they love Doctor Who to death want to be known for more than just that and branch out to other projects that who knows, could be the next big hit. Like Jessica Jones with DT and Arthur Darvill in DC Legends of Tomorrow.

It took awhile for DT to get another TV hit, he had a few bombs in American movies (Fright night 2 anyone?)

I did get the impression that Matt Smith thought he would do a Gillan but that hasn't happened so as stated above he probably realises he was better off. I thought it was a shame I really liked him.

Terribly, DT did not have much success in American movies...but TV is a different story

I got the impression he wanted a movie career(Like a lot off TV actors)..but it never took off
The same happened to DT, he was not successful in Hollywood Movies...but he found much success again in TV.

I quite liked it, and Tennant in particular was brilliant in it as always.

I wonder if the typecasting thing is a 'thing' then? MS and DT are quality actors, yet if Who hasn't really been a stepping stone to bigger things, maybe younger actors aren't really going to want to do it in the future. MS hasn't really got a 'Hollywood' face but DT has. Karen moved to L.A. and threw herself into the Hollywood thing. She's also very attractive. I think that was more reason for success than being in Doctor Who.
