We can compare him with Old Who incarnations until the cows come home, but in my opinion, notwithstanding his talents and dedication, Capaldi does lack a certain je ne sais quoi that could capture a global audience in the same way that Tennant or Smith managed.

I always thought that sort of came with the territory with this programme. Remember that time in the early 70s when it seemed like there was a big-scale alien attack every other month and no one seemed to notice? Or when every universe was destroyed by the Daleks, except that was averted, even though they'd already established there was a universe where they succeeded? Heck, what about all those alternate present days where Earth was just a bit more advanced?
One liner, quip, random plot point, quip, the Doctor boasting, quip, a bit of plot that doesn't make a lot of sense, self-aware nod to the audience, one liner, quip, add a 'funny' turn by this episodes comedy guest star, mention something about how lonely the Doctor is, melodramatic moment, quip, running low on time because of too many quips so let's wrap up the threat in one sentence, quip, focus on the Doctor looking lonely, cue end credits. Pretty much sums up most 'light-hearted' Doctor Who episodes these days for me and I found that difficult to get through I'm afraid. I'd love to post something positive so I will say the guest cast were pretty good.

To me, the Doctor has never been full on rude as he has been with Capaldi. He can be a bit brusk at times but not rude. Even Doctors of old weren't rude like Capaldi's have been. There's always that twinkle in their eye that deep down they don't mean it.

I really don't know about that. Compared to how Pertwee, Hartnell and Baker could be at some times; Capaldi is perfectly innocent.

But there's a difference, the character has evolved, quite literally, since that era. And so has the viewership and the way people watch TV. Even as a fan of the show, I find it hard to accept that the Doctor would regress, so to speak, after the development we invested in through Tennant and Smith. Ultimately, it seems a shame that the title character development would go in a direction that fails to take into account its most successful formula with a global audience.

I don't think so. He went from charming and innocent with Peter Davison, back to rude and sinister with Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, then someone more approachable again with Paul McGann, to aggressive and alienated again with Christopher Eccleston. Even Patrick Troughton was far more friendly than his immediate predecessor or successor. Seems to me he's been all over the place.
And I'm sure they did take into account the success of what worked with Tennant and Smith. Doesn't mean they're going to keep doing it again and again and let it run stale... they're going to change and experiment. If the show was the same as it was ten years ago it wouldn't even be here today.

Well to me, Capaldi's anti-social grandad act is what is stale. The magician outfit, the Malcolm Tucker accent, the boring haircut (which I appreciate he is subtly growing out), it all seems to me like a pretty big gamble with the new viewership, which is spoiled for choice and may not be as compelled to put up with drastic change as the Old Who audience. All I'm saying is, if it's about changing and experimenting, let's waste no time with the next makeover.

He's making it easy for the BBC to do whatever it likes with the show.
the core story was actually good. When they went into the Brain room it was actually very scary. All the romance guff was just pointless and so badly written
this idea of putting PC's doctor almost as a secondary character ? 1st it was Clara.
Just reading the tweets and its summing up pretty much when people are getting slagged off on here for saying.

Fair enough, I think he's great, the scripts let him down but If say Tennant was doing some of these stories they would be unwatchable, Capaldi is the saving grace despite anything else.

Exactly if he stayed the same it could get very boring. The whole point is to have a 'new' man each time and if he revisits some of his earlier ways, so what?
Just got round to watching it, it was Okay but it didn't feel like Doctor Who it felt more mundane to Doctor Who, its amazing for just another short Christmas Film or special you'll see on the guide but thats it. I found the American accents very distracting and the other American elements included aswell as the cheesey one-liners and quips you could come to expect from a Steven Moffat Christmas Romp. I didn't particularly care for Nardole or thought he added anything to the episode, personally I don't think the episode would've lost anything if he wasn't included.
I feel like Bill is gonna irritate me from the Coming Soon trailer her dialogue seemed a little bit contrived for me it didn't have the natural human touch like her predecessors (excluding Clara), I'll watch it but I feel like it'll be very average at best, personally because for me Doctor Who is one of those shows that if the main leads that we're gonna be spending most of our time with don't have any Charisma then it makes the plot fall flat for me.
For me 2018 couldn't come soon enough I need a breath of fresh air from another Showrunner, I think Moffat is way past his sell-by-date, as I feel like this is as good as its gonna get.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy that episode so for the first time since 2005, I didn't watch this Christmas special at the
same time it was being broadcast, and have just finished watching it on my YouView box. and I thought it was OK.
Certainly nowhere near as bad as a lot of folks on this thread are making it out to be, especially those that were
calling it an anagram of carp while the episode was still on. How can anyone follow an episode of a TV drama
while they're busy being keyboard warriors posting on an internet forum throughout the episode?
Did anyone else notice a subtle nod to BBC Radiophonic Workshop style incidental music during one scene ... ?

Personally I still don't think Moffat gets how to write for PC's doctor.
At the end he got MS's doctor down to a T. with some amazing stories that brought out the best in both of them. He lost It when Clara became the lead and the show became all about her. I actually liked Clara but you could see he found it easier writing stories for her than PC.
It'll be interesting to see if the AI is closer to the internet's reaction (a good part negative) or the critics (who loved it - Radio Times 5/5, Daily Mail 4/5, etc.).
I can well believe it might be an episode much more appreciated by the general public. My family were certainly the most engaged they've been with Doctor Who for ages, even if I thought it was a 5/10.

Well, you can't pretend these things don't make an impression. Hartnell's wig, Tom Baker's curls, not to mention his scarf... It was most telling to me when Frank Skinner guest starred alongside Capaldi that they made him wear a hat the entire time, otherwise it would have looked like a stunt double had wandered into shot. So yeah, I think Twelve makes for pretty underwhelming cosplay.
I honestly don't get this 'brusque' thing with this episode, or really since his 'Mid-life crisis' spell in his first series. (Well, okay, there's the shades and the electric guitar!) I thought The Doctor was in quite charming form from the off here, with an undertow of sadness that popped up a few times and were beautifully played.. Personally think he's getting better and better and am in no rush to see Capaldi move on.
(Still going with a gut feeling that Series 10 will be his last, though...)

Found it all very blah. It felt like Thw Doctor was a sub plot in and episode of a shitty America soap opera. Badly acted to boot.

I'm thinking I'll give the new series a miss. I'm bored of the disappointment. Sorry but the sooner Moffat goes the better as far as I'm concerned.

Sometimes I feel like Steven Moffat just picked PC just because, instead of him actually knowing what hes going to do with him.

If Moffat is struggling to write for PC's doctor then surely someone above should relieve him from his duties. PC is a good actor and IMO suits being the doctor but is suffering from bad scripts and direction.
As I said earlier though I'll be giving the next series a miss as I don't want to end up hating the show.

I only saw a few negative tweets. Most were to do with Sherlock or generally positive tweets when I did a search. But still, if it makes everyone feel better about hating the show at the moment, go ahead!
