I pretty much liked them all apart from the stencil one.

The judges choices can be very predictable, I knew exactly who they would pick last night and didnt agree as usual. I do not get the love of the stencilling bloke. He just cuts bits out of photos, yes its fussy and finnicky, but anyone with patience and a spray can could learn it, not innate artistic ability.

Anyone catch the Semi Final last night? Obviously the National Trust houses and grounds are gorgeous, but was glad to smell some sea air for a change!
Repeated 6.00 pm tonight and again at 7 pm on Friday. ![]() Loved the fabric artist's mixed media painting. Her colours were gorgeous and was much better than the blobby painting put through, imo. I think she missed out because they didn't want two, alternative type artists in the Final and that space went to the paper cutting chap (who I liked also). NB. You don't need to put text in spoilers if the programme has already been aired...

Still gutted to lose the wool woman, her landscape looked like something from Wuthering Heights. I just loved it. |

The judges should go I'm sorry but putting through that stencil artwork that didn't turn out right and saying I like the way you leave the canvas bare and let the viewer fill in the gaps, this kind of garbage speak is what gives art a bad name in my eyes. You could clearly see the guy knew it didn't turn out right but was like oh well these things happen (they even asked him this) which is what happens with certain style of art but no one on this earth would of seen it as a better artwork than the others. For most of the series they have been judged well and last week was a shock but this week its last series all over again. It makes a joke of the whole thing. I mean no offence to the artist here who did the stencil work, I like stencil and graphic art immensely and I'm sure I'd love some of your other art.
What they should do in my eyes is turn the whole thing interactive and use the red button(how come we never hear from this these days, used to be all the rage) and at the end it asks the people at home to vote and gives you all the artists and you pick your top 3 then the winner, you obviously wouldn't know at the end of the show who had won though, unless somehow it was live or your votes were counted and then you checked their sky arts website a few hours later to see who was through. Either that or pick some judges who can judge more on what people at home would think should go through, don't get me wrong some people do like unique and contemporary things, but on a program like this it hugely frustrates and neglects the audience at home's opinion as a whole when you pick the most blank canvas as the winner, and say stuff like you the audience you should fill in the gaps in your head of what they've missed out on their canvas and up yours other artists who've tried really hard for 4 hours painting, you should of done something more blank and brought your scissors or sat back for 3 and a half hours and made a few weird brush strokes or something to stand a better chance of getting through. My top 3 for what its worth would of been the lady with the textiles in the sea and dripping paint, the guy painting with his feet at the end, and the woman sat down with the ink work, thankfully she was put through. Rant over lol |

That's just reminded me of a missing part of the programme this year.
There used to be a representative from the places they painted, such as a custodian, or a long serving member of staff, who used to select their own favourite painting, to keep and exhibit at the place concerned. This acted as a balance, a sort of 'people's choice', to the more ''avant-garde'' selections of the judges. Wonder why they dropped this aspect. |

Thanks for the heads up about Portrait Artist, shame we have to wait until next year though! Can't wait and will look out for that! |

I think the ink lady wildcard winner was the judges' only half decent choice. Gregor seems like a nice chap, but I'm sorry, his stencil picture was crap! The judges also seem to love Richard, and while I think his painting this week was an improvement on last week's effort, I still think he is hugely overrated by them. |

I totally agree I was much more into his work this week , I forgot his name but there was an artist last year who no matter what he produced they seemed to love over others I considered much more visually appealing, I know art is hard to judge cause everyone has different views of whats good but I think the program needs a new way of working out the judging process.

The one who looks like Richard Bacon isn't that great in my mind.
Yes he has a style, but... meh. The fabric lady did a great job in previous rounds but the location did not suit the material application, so it looked odd. Her blocked colour painting before she titivated it looked a lot nicer. The ink one was OK - but was a bit poor in terms of perspective. The stencilling is basically banksy in miniature, not hugely technical (give it's primarily cutting out photographs and painting in abstract parts). |

Neither of these artists demonstrated much versatility - they seemed only capable of 'forcing' their technique onto the subject, rather than letting the subject guide them.

Watched the final this evening (I think there's another programme next week covering the 10,000 pound commission)
It was interesting to see that the finalists had all been given an extra commision, at varying locations, with no time restrictions as such (or not in the way the pieces are timed usually) Didn't know whether or not I agreed with the judges; each had plus and minus points for me. Won't say more, in case others haven't seen it yet. (btw Thanks Nesta for the thread!) |

Thank goodness the lady who used the ink didn't do her normal practice of kneeling down to paint. I ended up with a bad back just watching her!

![]() Stansfield, I totally agree with you. A deserved winner compared with the other two's commissioned work. |

Yeah I was left bored if I'm honest with the final, I stupidly thought last weeks was the semi and this week we'd have another semi with another 3 put through for a six final, don't know why I presumed that lol, anyway no I really don't think I'd of chosen any of those three for my final 3, maybe struggled into my top ten if I'm honest, I liked many of the artists and going back I find it odd the judges thought these were the strongest. So thought the final was the most boring episode of the lot and I would of struggled to of picked a winner out of them.

Just a heads up, there's one more episode to go tomorrow night. Maybe with more time, Richard will pull off something good.
"In the final episode, the winner will paint their prize commission at another of our places, Petworth in West Sussex. Petworth's heritage is particularly fitting as its surrounding landscape inspired many of J.W.M Turner's paintings." https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/fea...-the-year-2016 |

I just hope the program makers choose some new judges for next time as these ones must be ruining viewing figures with their decisions, I love art and art programs but I won't be bothering to see what Richard does this week in that final episode.
Keep Frank though, he's great and will boost viewing figures. |
