I would rather they didn't but I also understand that almost every story has been told in soaps, so they need to find different ways of telling the stories. This could be by making sure characters are well fleshed out so the audience has some kind of connection with the character before they play out the story, and the only way to do that is to stop axing characters after a year or two.
I understand the need for new characters, therefore, sometimes "tired" characters need rested or written out but soaps and I mean particularly EE as that is the one I have watched uninterrupted, over the last 5 or 6 years seem to spend all there time on departures or introductions that the flow has been dire. EE needs a stable cast in order to get some quality stories that could take months or years without vital cast members leaving or being axed mid-story. Everything has felt rushed, and you get the feeling re-writes rule the roost.
I just want stories that are well planned, within character, and at a sensible pacing so the audience don't get bored. I would also rather that the stock stories for soaps of the big affair and the alcohol misuse stories were used less as they are becoming particularly tedious. In EE over the last few years we've had Phil's and Shirley's alcoholism then they seemed to be doing the same with Denise and dropped it like a stone, Lauren was an alcoholic and her mother not much better. Can they think of nothing else??I appreciate once an alcoholic always an alcoholic, and with Phil that's fine but it's getting to be every other character. As for affairs, is there anyone in soap who hasn't had one?
Thanks
