It works with any TV it can plug in to, it doesn't need to be a smart tv. The Apple box does all the smart stuff it needs to itself.

By the way can you get Smart tv's that have Apple music on or is the only way of getting it on your TV with an apple tv box?

No TVs have been launched with Apple TV built in. There have been rumours of an Apple Television or 'iTV' around for years, but nothing ever happened.

To be honest it is better to have the 'smart' technology separate to the TV screen because the TV screen can have a lifespan of the best part of a decade, but the smart technology built in can be outdated and unsupported within 2-3 years. So if you have the technology in an external box then you can just replace that after 2-3 years to get more up to date tech, whilst your same TV screen continues to provide the display (although of course if you wanted to use higher resolution video services then you would need a new TV).

If your wanting to use Apple Music then you'll need to make sure you get an Apple TV 4 as the Apple TV 3 doesn't have it.

Apple TV3 is no longer sold direct by Apple although some refurb units may still become available.

Late to this thread and you may have bought an Apple TV already but one of the frustrating things about the Apple TV is than not all apps are available such as Amazon. I understand that both Apple and Amazon are competitors but they do not conflict with each other regarding their streaming services. Apple have sold millions of boxes and people who want to stream Amazon surely want to stream it on their Apple box rather than buy a separate box/stick. Amazon will secure more revenue through their content subscription service than they will through selling boxes. Boxes should be bought on performance but should include all of the main streaming services, Amazon, Netflix, SKY etc.
