National Selection Season 2017
Yep, they've begun already! And despite being denied the early glories of Switzerland, as they've decided to choose which of their songs will come third from last by a different means this year, there's already been some early adopters kicking about.
Hosts Ukraine and our very own UK have publicly opened their application process, and you'll already find a few wonky gems nestling about on YouTube (Alex Angel is your best hope for badness here as he's applied for both!), but over the last few days we've seen the start of our first proper televised selection process - Depi Evratesil in Armenia. They've decided to throughly overhaul their process this year – and yes, it's another of those casting shows where a gang of former ESC singers sit behind desks and push buttons and get all critical on their asses until they finally get to some kind of final on Christmas Eve. Except sadly, so far, this lot have all been pretty decent. Where's the fun in that! In fact, there's only really been one truly special singer so far - Alexander Plato. Watch in wonder as the judges all start to wish that they hadn't pressed their buttons quite so early! http://eurovisionapocalypse.blogspot...lato-depi.html |

The Armenians look like they do mean business though. The Jury contains 2007, 2009, 2014, 2015 (one of 6) and 2016 Contestants. I mean this is for real, people who actually know what they are talking about and know what is required to win. Not Carrie Grant whose entry must be high up on a list of "my eyes hurt".
How fearsome will Ukraine's selection be this year? It was tough to pick a winner from the finals last year (how ironic), I actually rather liked all of the songs on offer and I can't imagine that the Finance Ministry will be wanting to risk actually winning again any time soon. Tough balance to find, a really good song with a strong staging but just not quite there without the fans calling you on it. They are so either gonna go with a major raspberry at the Russians or gonna go the Hamster Wheel route and go kitsch-supreme on us, there is no middle-ground there.... The rumours about Mel C singing for the UK - nah, stinks of desperation. You need somebody in their twenties or early thirties and with recent chart experience and a profile on the Continent to have any prayer. Mel is an experienced hand who knows about big stages and is far more convincing out on her own, but when was she last in the charts? If you go for a big star, you go for somebody current and interesting. Can you imagine Paloma Faith in Eurovision? Bet she'd do it for a laugh too, she's crazy enough and it ain't going to hurt her image. But in all seriousness, you'd have to be absolutely crazy to want to represent us this coming Contest given the UK's near universal unpopularity across Europe and rumours that the ratio of jury to tele-votes is to be changed favouring the public which will inevitably hurt us even more.... San Marino may as well chain Valentina Monetta to the stage. I mean how many people can they find? It's her or re-flagging somebody from outside, maybe offering it to somebody who came a very narrow second in their national selection (though wiwibloggs is advocating for the Return of Serhat!) Perhaps it might be as well to let them make a joint entry with a couple of other small territories, say Andorra, Monaco and Liechtenstein, sort of like the Independent Athletes campaign under the Olympic flag every four years. Options I think need to be looked at for keeping smaller and poorer states in the Contest (Bosnia and Herzegovina is just the most recent) and maybe trying to get places like Slovakia to come and try again. |

Eesti news
We have the first mutterings of a line up from the glorious Eesti Laul.
There's a list doing the rounds purporting to be the acts who have been invited to submit a song. Whether it's real or not is up for discussion, but there's a nice bunch of familiar old friends and completely new freakazoids on there. Here's the list. Log it in the corner of your brain for later reference… Artjom Savitski Birgit Varjun Boogie Company Cathouse Radio G.O.S.H. Getter Jani Grete Paia Ines Kaidi & Barn Brothers Kenneth Rüütli & Maja Vahtramäe Kerli Kivilaan & Norman Salumäe Band Laura Liis Lemsalu Mikk Mäe PopIdiot Ott Lepland Rasmus Randvee Robin Juhkental & The Big Bangers Rolf Roosalu Six Feet Club The Jingles Val Tvoar Ziggy Wild Only the one song has got a link to it, and it's a right belter - although not really in a Eurovision way. Still, it could be a glorious semi-final blow out for the Six Feet Club. Here's the song… http://eurovisionapocalypse.blogspot...etu-tartu.html |

We need an artist that has huge Europe/Eastern European popularity to be in with a chance. One band I can think of is Hurts, who are seriously popular.

Earlier than usual with the Hurts, for sure!
Let me just put this one to bed. I interviewed Hurts last year and asked them specifically about all the rumours. They said that they've never actually said they'd do it, and they wouldn't fancy it under their own steam, but they did write a song for a very specific artist (who they never revealed) for a couple of years back. But while the Beeb liked the song, they weren't that keen on the choice of artist, and wanted to attach their own to the song. Hurts duly refused, and haven't released the song in any form to this day - partially hoping that Auntie will come to her senses and see that their plan is a sensible idea. One suspects they might be waiting a while... |

You know how this new secret Swiss system was supposed to deter the more, how shall we say, esoteric acts from publicly applying to be their representatives? Well it hasn't worked.
This is a thing of some bad beauty! http://eurovisionapocalypse.blogspot...-duras-us.html |

How's this for a somewhat awkward highlight from the Ukranian wildcard auditions. You won't know where to look!
