OP whatever fragrance you choose you could perhaps follow it up with the shower gel. It means you don't have to use so much of the aftershave and the layering of the fragrance will leave a gentle scent but it's very long lasting. I only do this with my very best perfumes though as it's quite expensive.

I'd definitely go for a classic Nivea aftershave - great for sensitive skin.

The original Nivea aftershave balm used to have a wonderful smell and women often used to ask me what I was wearing. Then about five or six years ago (at a guess) they replaced it with one of those generic seaweed-like smells. Why do so many manufacturers keep trying to fix something that isn't broken?

Probably a cost saving exercise. The problem is the consumers know when the formula has changed and then people just stop buying.

I agree with what Lushness has put.

I'd also suggest it might in some cases be down to the IFRA restrictions on certain ingredients, which have been used for years, and the manufacturers having to use substitutes (synthetic ones a lot of the time).

Going slightly off topic...

Many many years ago, a magazine gave away a scented bookmark which smelled of old libraries/old books. A french perfumer concocted it and it was amazing. I'd take it out of a box I kept it in & be intoxicated by it!

It was that exact smell, minus the 'mustiness' you get from damp books. It was the best scent i've ever come across, apart from maybe jasmine.

I grow a couple of roses just for the scent as well. I've always got my conk in the bush in summer.

Lifts yer mood!

I'm a bit like that with that perfume called Angel. I swear it chemically alters my brain to the extent that it must affect me like catnip with cats. I become absolutely intoicated with it to the extent that I think I'm going to buy some, spray it on my pillow, then stay in bed for a week.

I used to go out with someone years ago who wore it, she was quite the nympho, to this day the smell of it still gives me a hard on.

Mmmm – I wonder if it's possible to turn a woman into a nympho by buying her some.

I recommend 'Spicebomb' (Viktor & Rolf) for the Autumn & Winter - it has quite a kick, but is not too strong & has a nice 'warmth' to it. I also like to wear the lighter/more subtle version 'Spicebomb Eau Fraiche' in the Spring/Summer.

For those who haven't seen it, the Fragrantica website has a useful function.
Find a scent you like, current or discontinued, and there's a list of suggestions.

Does scratch & sniff work over the internet?

Dior Eau Sauvage - a classic, tangy aftershave, and often used by women but don't let that put you off! £49.50 from Boots for the EDT spray.

PS Stay away from Lynx!
Good advice.

OP I'd also recommend for you Issey Miyake, Aramis or Eau Sauvage or even perhaps Tommy by Hilfiger.

What a horrible stench Angel is; smells like cats pee.

I used to be big into expensive designer aftershave in the past and amassed a big collection, however I seem to have "grown out" of it. I find the smells have become too offensive and gawdy....guess I didn't take much notice in my youth. Issy Miyake in particular makes me gag with that horrible, overbearing spicy scent
Anyway, now I much prefer to use "lower end" brands like Lacoste which are pretty inoffensive but smell fresh. In fact, I concoct my own aftershave by mixing two particular Lacoste aftershaves together to create a super one. I've often been complimented for smelling delicious since I've started doing this Unfortunately, one of them has been discontinued since.

I love the earthy smell of Creed, I would say it's my favourite. It's just so expensive that it's rare that I ever get to smell it.
Fortunately my next favourite is one of the cheapest you can buy and that's Old Spice !

I've got that. It is very good quality.

I also use Ralph Lauren Polo, Chanel Bleu, Issey Miyake, and G.F Trumper's West Indian Limes cologne. The Sandalwood from GFT is also very nice.

Hi everyone!

Many thanks for all of your kind contributions and suggestions. You have certainly given me some great ideas and food for thought. I intend to try many of your recommendations, once my bank balance is a bit healthier, lol. I appreciate your input and welcome any more of your ideas.

On that note, have any of you ever tried Azzaro Wanted? I saw it for the first time in Debenhams yesterday, though I had not heard of it before or seen it in any other shop. It did seem quite expensive for a small-ish bottle, but I think it does fall within my price range. Anyway, I had a little squirt of it and I thought it smelt nice. It smelt very sweet and reminded me a bit of the smell of pineapple. I wondered if any of you had come across it before and, if so, what your opinions of it were? I am always keen to hear the views and opinions of others.

Please keep your aftershave suggestions coming, in the meantime.

Thanks again for your time!

Frazer

I haven't heard of Azzaro Wanted but the first two words of the description (woody/spicy) is enough to tell me that it's not for me.

Several brands have been forced to reformulate due to an EU ruling last year bannning oak moss. As a result many fragrances, including some of the ones mentioned in the thread aren't as strong as before and don't have the longevity they used to.
