I thought the same! Bad planning from the BBC. Michael Ball's voice used to be stronger didn't it??

Well come on; if you're going to do Strictly, you need a decent rehearsal space.

A real treat. Loved it. And for once we didn't have the audience stamping and whistling.

Alfie is the better singer and he sang it better

I do have a soft spot for Fatty Ball and Shortie Boe. I love them

Classic bit of Beeb planning - week after week they foist some mumbling monotonous pop person on us, yet when they finally snag a couple of excellent singers they put them both on at once!

No doubt it will be back to business as usual next week.

Two different styles of singing that didn't really gel for me. Either of them on their own would have been better. I also have a thing about opera singers always singing in an opera style regardless of the song they are singing, but that's my problem!!

Not just your problem actually. I too (and probably quite a few others) frequently find this, but Alfie is not really an opera singer and doesn't overdo the classical delivery when singing popular songs (imo, of course.)

Real opera singers never seem to get the idea that popular songs rarely need to be blasted out at full volume with exaggerated pronunciation.

I went to a concert of an opera singer, who felt the same. And to prove his point how ridiculous it is he blasted out Mona Lisa as an "opera singer". The audience cried with laughter!! I can't remember his name but he was brilliant, did a night of light jazz and Mona Lisa was the only bit of "opera" we heard.

I much preferred Michael to Alfie (but I don't like operatic style singing of popular songs whoever it is) and Anton and Joanne's dance was lovely. We seem to be seeing more ballroom pro dances this year which is great.

The Big awing was filmed weeks ago at the Proms in the Royal Albert hall. Song s of praise gets up to two million viewers, SCD 9/10 million viewers, so about 7 million didn't see it, many viewers do not sit in front of a TV all day, and on one channel only, they may go out, I was on BBC1 and switched to BBC News at 4 pm for example.

And on radio songs are often played every few hours.....

Pitched too low. Neither could properly sing their first note. Pitched low to enable Boe to hit the higher notes? Probably.
Badly matched voices. Ball too weak so drowned out by Boe. Or a mixing desk issue.
Overblown orchestration .... the original is very, very sparse.
Did a beautiful song no favours at all.
A pity.

I think Michael Ball was holding it back a little so that his and Alfie Boe's voices blended better together. I've seen Michael loads of times and in my opinion his voice is as good as ever. I'm also seeing them on tour so will reserve judgement as sometimes live performances of even the best of singers don't always come over as well on tv. `I loved the beautiful and more subtle dance that went with it.

I found the whole thing very beautiful - both the singing and the dancing. The only slight thing was that Michael Ball often had the tune, and Alfie Boe had the harmonies. Because Alfie has a stronger voice, that meant they didn't quite blend together properly.

The ending was awful with them both singing together.

Me too, lucky you seeing them on tour. This will be the first MB tour I am not going to. I did see them both in Kismet years ago, although I don't remember them singing together.
You can't really compare their voices as MB has a musical theatre type voice and AB opera, but the are both terrific..imo...very gutted I will not be seeing them live again!

A complete SCD disaster! Never happened before, must never happen again.

Singers who could actually sing.

Singers who you could actually hear.

Singers who actually had real talent.

The sound and balance between orchestra and singers was right, a first on SCD.

No mindless moronic clapping and cheering to ruin the presentation.

First time ever that a guest spot could be enjoyed.

Ah well, next week back to weak voiced mumbling untalented pop "stars"

Where will it all end?
