would like to adopt a rescue cat but other half smokes like a chimney. Would I be refused because of this do you think? Cat would have access to outside but worry about effects of smoke on it.

Never seen smoking on any of the rescue sites as a reason for not homing an animal.
Usually it's if you live near a busy road, and have a garden for them to have access to.

We have had several cats over the years all very long lived, with a house full of smokers.

Thanks, that sounds good .Wouldn't like to put the mite at risk. I've had a few cats before but none of them lived more than about 12.

I don't think it is a problem, there are so many cats that need a home, one with a smoker is better than no home at all.

Most unlikely. Centres are overrun with cats, and they often will let them go to homes which may fall short of the very highest standards.

When I had Lucy, the RSPCA phoned me two days before I was due to collect her, and asked if I would take her that day, as they were reaching crisis point with available accommodation. Although according to the member of staff I spoke to it was "always crisis point".

You have probably adopted a cat by now but if any objections to smoking I would refer them to my vet for evidence. This is a smoker's house.

On 22 October I said goodbye to Suki, she had just turned 23 years old, half Siamese and able to jump up a 6 ft gate until a few years ago.
One of my dogs, a rescue medium sized Heinz 57 is 19 years old and still very active, survived cancer age 13.
I had a Blue point Siamese who lived for 22 years.
The youngest any of my dogs died was at 8, from cancer the vet blamed on an undescended testicle he found during the operation that was supposed to save him. My beloved Mitzi died of sudden kidney failure at 13.

I realise I have been very lucky with my mostly rescue pets, there is nothing special about the way I care for them.
