Anyone have any recommendations? She has never owned a smartphone but wants a Samsung Galaxy because some of her friends have one.

I'll spend upto £200 - any recommendations for a Samsung phone? I'm thinking Galaxy j7?

First thing is will your Mum require the phone to have a reasonable camera on it ?, also what other things would she want to do on the phone ?.

Thanks for replying.

It's her first smartphone, so anything decent from the Samsung range will be more than ideal!

If a smaller sized Samsung is desired (4.7 inch), then check out the Samsung Galaxy A3 2016 model. Available on eBay as new for £190ish. It's more premium looking than the J7, with glass front and back and metal trim.

When you think that cost over £500 not so long ago...

You have to remember though that this phone will only get a two year OS support cycle and it's already over a year old so not perhaps the bargain it first appears. It should continue to get security updates for a further year though.

Also bear in mind the S6 has horrible battery and signal issues, I sold mine on after a few months as it wouldn't even last a day without a charge.

My wife has the S6. We are both on EE and if my phone (Nexus 6p) is on the table next to hers, I get a full 4G signal, she's lucky to get 1 bar.

Weird, maybe they made some hardware changes, but a quick google brings up many results of people complaining about both issues

Yes, if I'm honest her battery seems to wear down faster than mine but I always think battery life is very difficult to evaluate. Everyone uses their phones differently with different apps. All these factors affect the battery life.

I will say avoid the J3 2016.

My friend had it less than a fortnight before the LCD panel cracked due to a manufacturing fault.

Not only that it's still running Android L with no plans by Samsung to roll out Android M.

Depends if she wants a phone with a built in cigarette lighter, if she does a Galaxy Note 7 will do nicely, they may be going very cheaply as they have now ceased production.

I'm assuming the OP is Prince Charles, so this is probably the kind of suggestion he's after...

Haha but that's only the note 7, his mum doesn't need anything that expensive

Something like the S4 or S5 might be a good idea
