Well Abba's first release of their greatest hits didn't have thank you for the music on it as the film was only just doing the rounds and people hadn't demanded that that track become a defining track.

I knew a local singer who did a Karen Carpenter tribute CD and didn't put "Goodbye to love" on it.

Yes it's ridiculous but it's happened a lot of times.

Wasn't Madonna's Immaculate Collection short of a few of her better known songs as well?

It's because the first two 10cc albums were on a different record label. It happens all the time. The other labels want too much money for the tracks so they get left off.

In the days of Spotify & Apple Music or even just ripping songs from your own CDs it baffles me that groups still release Greatest Hits albums

In the days when the songs were spread over several different albums then it was understandable but these days anyone can produce their own Greatest Hits album and avoid the "new song"

I assume you mean the album Gold:Greatest Hits and the film Mamma Mia. Greatest Hits came out in 1975

It was only in Australia/NZ that TYFTM wasn't on Gold until 2008. They had Rock Me instead, because it had been a big hit down under. But your point is correct in essence.

Copyright issues in the music industry are a minefield. Particularly when artists change labels.

In the Everly Brothers documentary, Don Everly said they changed record labels for a lot of money, going from Cadence to Warner Bros.
This meant they couldn't record any more F & B Bryant songs who wrote nearly all of their hits, nor anything they wrote themselves as Cadence who owned the rights to the music, wouldn't allow it.

They wouldn't have been able to make a compilation album which contained hits from both labels.

10cc Collected is supposed to be one of their best compilations and it does have Rubber Bullets: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Collected-1..._mus_ep_dpi_14

Indeed it was not until 2002 that the Stones released a greatest hits album which contained the 60s hits and the 70s ones. Due to the copyright issues after they were hoodwinked after their 60s stuff.

Not everyone consumes music like that though. To fully understand any market sector, you have to think more broadly than what you do personally.

My Daily Mail 'Best of...Live' includes Rubber Bullets but not Donna...
