Portable DAB radios with external aerial
Phred
12-10-2016
Situation:
Where we live we can only get DAB through a roof mounted aerial.

Our Cambridge Audio tuner has stopped receiving DAB, although FM is ok.

Want to test the aerial using portable before committing to new (expensive) tuner.

We used to have a Pure digital radio on which the aerial could be removed and an F connector aerial used, but daughter took it on a holiday and lost it!

Have been looking at new Pure radios, but they all seem to have non-removable aerials nowadays.

Is there currently a portable (cheap!) DAB radio that has the ability to accept a F-connector aerial feed?

Thanks for any replies

Can you take the DAB tuner to anyone else with an external DAB aerial to test it? I mean I wouldn't rule out the tuner being faulty but it could just as easily be a coax or aerial issue. A test elsewhere might help eliminate an unknown.

Thanks for reply.

No-one round here with a DAB aerial - most people use their TVs!

Tried looking for second-hand ones but none around at present.

If all you want to do is test the roof aerial then any old portable should do. All you have to do is touch the inner conductor of the F-Type plug onto the telescopic aerial of the portable. If the radio cannot receive anything with the aerial retracted then doing this with a working aerial should allow it to receive something.

If the radio has a signal strength indicator you should see a change in reading when you touch the plug on the telescopic aerial. Might not be a 100% perfect test but might point you in the right direction. Trouble is you can't completely rule out the radio using just the cable as an aerial, but that would apply if it had an F-Type socket anyway.

I have a Roberts Ecologic 4 that has a detachable aerial with an F-Type. Though it is hidden behind a little cover held on by a small screw so not immediately obvious. Not sure if the new version is the same or if 90 quid (ish from Amazon) meets your definition of cheap

I use one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pure-The-B...4AAOSwpLNX~N7N
It has an F-connector and I use it with an external aerial so that I can receive London stations in Witham, Essex.
