Sophie had enough feelings to leave flowers on Reed's grave why didn't she think of Lena's parents? She was happy, yes happy to move to Switzeralnd and forget all about it.

No, I don't he was, or Reed. That was a bit silly too. Gettrick said he had a recording of the two of them discussing girls in Iraq? but they didn't bother asking him to produce it. Instead, they believed him and went along with his blackmail.

but when Gettrick was talking about the recording he says something about how after Reed left he and Stone talked more about the girls they liked (wtte) and Stone looked like he knew he had him over a barrel .

The three of them met in a bar? a week ago. Gettrick recorded their conversation, but how did he know that Sophie was going to get appendicitis then, and use the recording to blackmail Stone with?

yes this bugged me because I remember people saying in this thread that once you develop appendicitis you've only got about 4 days to get it treated or you'll die .

I think they were playing with us a little - since they know how much we wanted him to survive the operation. They made us think something might be going wrong. Then they completed the countdown (and I think they ended on 3 but I've not gone back to confirm that) to suggest to us that there would be a missing 3 - and play on all the visuals they'd had throughout the series with 3s everywhere. (Put in I think for the obsessive fans now they now that we freeze frame everything and post about t!)

The bit I found really suspect was putting the body in the shed. I mean, it's not exactly like posting a Christmas card through a letter box, is it. Also, how did Sophie get out after she'd asked her 'brother' to lock her in? Perhaps I have missed or forgotten something really obvious there.

As far as the police were concerned Sophie died in the shed fire in 2014. In 2016 when they found her I'm sure they were well aware of the full facts of her abduction and state of mind

We don't know they didn't as the story effectively ended when they found the girls. Other abductees have been used to try and abduct other children in real life but I'm not aware of any abductee having to then face charges.

I think the psychological affect on an abductee speaks for itself

Sophie did not kidnap Lena. I don't think the responsibility should be placed on her shoulders. She needs tonget herself better and we don't actually know she was "happy" to move to Switzerland - what is clear in my view is that at the time of discovery, she was clearly mentally damaged by her ordeal.

But Sophie was there. She was wearing Alice's necklace which was later found around Lena's burnt body.

I blame the writers.

They've collected a mishmash of events of real abductees and come up with their own version. I enjoyed watching the series as it went along, but looking back on it now, I can see that some things were too far- fetched and scarcely credible.

That's not right. The Polizei, Sam and Gemma for a while at least believed that Alice had died in the shed. Of course we know that Sophie was pretending to be Alice at that point.

What does any of that prove?
Gettrick controlled Sophie. He removed any meaningful idea of free will from her. She was doing what she was told to do by Gettrick.

The writers left us with ambiguities about Sophie's feelings for her captor, but even if she felt what she thought was love, is anyone seriously suggesting this was natural and freely given?!

Ok, Sophie who for a time was "Alice" was believed to have died in the shed fire. Sophie was believed to have died in captivity. The point I'm making is that it wasn't until 2016 that the truth came out. They discovered Sophie was in fact alive - the reasons for her behaviour still stand. Her actions were due to the impact of her captivity - NOT criminal.

Was Stone faking the dementia?

Just finished watching the last episode last night - absolutely loved the series and have enjoyed reading this thread.

As always there are a couple of little "buts" in my head, maybe someone would clarify for me.

When Sam finally believed, after seeing the stars - I thought the fact that he and his wife just traipsed along with Baptiste to the village for a showdown was a bit far fetched....

Also, when they arrived in the village and were in the café, it was a bit of a co-incidence that the blond waiter guy was there and just happened to look over the shoulder when the photo was on the phone.

But they are very minor points, all in all it was extremely watchable and tense - and I do hope Baptiste survives the operation and we get a number Three! (loved the ending!)

I don't think so - with dementia there are periods of absolute lucidity, and I think he had one at that point......but I believe he was suffering from dementia.

I enjoyed this much more than the first series. I think it was the acting - especially by the main set of parents, which made this much better. I also prefer the clear ending!

I'm really quite shocked that some people feel that Sophie could be considered an accomplice. She was taken as a child, kept locked up for years, presumably raped and then her child was kept hostage to ensure she behaved for the period of time she was freed because of the illness.

She was completely messed up in the head by Gettrick. She could never be considered an accomplice.

The writers have confirmed since series ended something along the lines of that whilst his dementia is genuine, it is still at the stage where he can be selective as to what he chooses to remember and/or forget when it suits him. Which leaves no doubt as to the meaning of his final scene with Eve.

tbf to the writers, what writer doesn't trim reality to make an exciting story? If you spend too long dissecting a story -no matter how great- you'll find things that don't "work" (whatever that means- after all, in real life, family life and court cases are riddled with human failings). I'd take your first reaction to the show and stick with it- why spoil it?
