I came on here to say pretty much the same thing. Aisling Bea was trying way too hard to be funny. She's not brilliant but she can be funny when she is just being natural.

It was a very poor start to the series, i didn't find it funny in the slightest. It's pretty much how i imagined it to be without Sean Lock.
I just don't find her funny. She's an odd choice.

Sean's a massive loss as is Jon. At least they are still doing the Countdown shows with 18 commissioned.

I appreciate we also have two threads here - I don't know if people merge them in the end?

I thought it was really poor. I find Aisling Bea usually on the border between being funny and annoying, but today she was well in the latter.

And I think Rob Beckett can be really good when he's 'the thick one' in a show, unfortunately in this all of them were. It was like a group of the thickest people they could get in one room.

Hopefully it gets better with different guests, but I definitely missed Jon and particularly Sean.

I had to series link it on saturday due to some clashes tonight but I might have to grab it from on demand to check it out after reading some of these opinions.

I enjoyed it on the whole even though I don't like Joe Wilkinson very much and I don't really know who the other 3 guests are

I'd seen Jamie on WILTY a few weeks ago and he seems OK as the butt of jokes

the girls from Tattoo fixers was OK........I liked her Prince Harry story

the Bristol girl was forgettable

I like Rob Beckett, he's really grown on me in the last couple of years

I like Aisling tho' this wasn't one of her better nights

I think it went downhill when it went to 50 minutes and they had to pad it out by getting the guests from behind the desks to do silly things..........that almost never works

But I'll carry on watching it as it's still the 2nd funniest show on TV after WILTY

I've given up on the Countdown one so wish they'd scrap that and bring Sean and Jon back to regular Cats

I remember laughing out loud at something during the show and it's just come back to me..........it was the Specsavers advert during one of the breaks with the security guard at the art gallery........

I only caught bits now and again but they all looked thoroughly bored between rounds. They need to cultivate some engaged expressions otherwise it looks like they're all just collecting a cheque.

This says a lot for the state of TV comedy.

I couldn't stand any of them except Beckett. Won't be watching again unfortunately.

It wasn't that bad, but Sean and Jon were a loss.

I'll give it some time to see if it gets stronger.

They can't really give us good material on the Countdown version though. Making jokes about letters and numbers has gone really stale now.

The Countdown version suits Jon a lot more than it does Sean because Sean's humour doesn't suit this kind of show. There's nothing in the Countdown version for him to feed off. I have also noticed that Sean and Jon quite often don't even appear on the Countdown version, they have a guest captain in place of one of them far too often. This was never the case on the regular version of 8 out of 10 cats. It makes me wonder just how committed the two of them are to the Countdown version.

It's a shame because i really think we are missing out, now we will never get to see moments like Carrot in a box again

I think it depends on the guests as well but sure, Sean isn't as strong on Countdown.

I'm not sure how often they record Countdown, but if it's commissioned for 18 more shows, they may have put in the contracts they had to be there every week which meant they quit normal 8 out of 10 cats to give all to Countdown.

Haha - I like that, Jon was done like a kipper.

Next weeks guests

Joey Essex, Cathy Newman, Roisin Conaty and Nish Kumar.

This doesn't fill me with hope - Joey Essex (!) Cathy Newman, news presenter, Roisin Conaty - bearable, Nish Kumar - his voice irritates me and he will reference his skin colour and/or mother for a laugh or two.

Joey Essex and Roisin Conaty? Good grief.

'Real' countdown records their five episodes in two and a half days, I believe, so maybe Cats Does is similar? That said, it's also a more elaborate production so maybe it could be slower, but that still allows for maybe doing two a week?

I think you are right - it will take longer for the Cats version.

Is it the same studio? As that would knock time for filming opportunities down.

Cats is in Manchester. I went to a taping a few weeks ago and I'm going again on the 30th.

Nice.

Any idea of the guests for your visit?

Just caught up with it last night and can't say I'm thrilled. It does seem to have tried to move from a (slightly) cleverer humour to the reality-TV way of laughing at the girl who doesn't know they don't real people on bonfire night, or the fat girl in a bodysuit. I do quite like Aisling Bea normally, so I wonder if she knew what she was getting into...

No idea. The last one had Danny Dyer on and was on TV last week.

It's dead simple to get tickets. You just sign-up and eventually you'll get some. We have priority seating this time round because our view was restricted last time (but in reality wasn't actually that bad).

Don't mind Rob Beckett and Aisling Bea when they're guests on panel shows but don't think they're worthy of being captains themselves. Only find Aisling occasionally funny and as others have said, she seems to be trying too hard here and her material just isn't good enough. Rob was just like his normal self and while that's okay for a guest, think he needs to offer a bit more as a captain.

I know they're both new to this and may grow into the roles, so I'll probably keep watching but think they both need to raise their game quite a lot.

Didn't see that one. I tend to watch depending on other factors and catch which ones I can.

I doubt I will go for tickets - bit of a trek to Manchester and I don't like it enough to make said trek.

I like Aisling, and thought she rose to the occasion pretty well here. I also like Rob. For me it was the guests who let this down. Joe was OK, but the rest had little to offer. If the change in channel is making it harder to get good guests, then the how is really in trouble.

I also wonder if they've picked the right channel- the first episode's panel featured two E4 personalities and one other who seemed to be cut from the same cloth. Can't imagine they're going to be playing to the More 4 crowd, and if those who can would be signing up for this.

Well, this is better.

Nish, Rob and Roisin doing well. Nish predictable by bringing race into it when he talked about white people.

Cathy is better than I thought and Joey Essex must be an act.

Still not feeling Aisling though. I've never watched any of her other stuff, but it feels from the little i've seen that she's a square pin trying to fit into a round hole and this kind of thing isn't her strength. Almost as if she doesn't think being herself is right for the format.

Either that or she just isn't funny to me.
