I miss it too. I think B&M has come in as a good replacement though.

Yeah Wilkos is closest thing to it. B&M and the like is too tacky.

No need for Woolworths now that we have B&M and the Range stores.
You may have them, unfortunately I live in snooty Bath - we don't have them.

Until I saw this thread I hadn't even given Woolworths a thought, so no I don't miss it. As others have said, it was good for stationary when i was a kid but as an adult I tend to spend more on that kind of thing now. Besides, with the internet who needs any kind of shop?
I think of Woolies every time I wish we had a Wilko's.

Yes, I'd say so. I miss being able to get decorating things cheaply, electrical bits and pieces, DIY stuff (although Screwfix is great and a lot cheaper than Homebase).

I miss the pick'n'mix and the confectionery section. Tesco does pick'n'mix but you cant get Jelly Babies or Quality Street in it. It also used to sell things like buttons and cotton and you could find some decent things if you looked (sheepskin rugs, cushions, vases).

Woolie and Worth sit on the bedside cabinets in our spare room.

They don't even have a Card Factory! Imagine the horror!

Nowhere near it surely. It doesn't have anywhere near the amount of stuff Woolworths had.

I used to love Woolworths, when I was little I used to go there every week for toys, CD's or sweets. I don't mind B&M as you can get some decent things in there, but I still prefer Woolies and do miss it.

I do kind of. Not that I bought loads of stuff from there, but it was part of my childhood and I liked getting the odd bargain!

My local one is a Poundland now, but it doesn't have half the floor space. I can only assume they use the extra space for the stockroom.

What was our Woolworths is now a Poundland. Very much doubt I'd have got a £1 vibrator for 'this time of year' if time were turned back

I remember buying a corkscrew from Woolworths in San Diego. Just a standard ordinary corkscrew in a 'T' shape. I put it into the wine bottle, pulled and out came the corkscrew - straight The cork remained in the bottle though!

Ours used to have a great Lego selection, well the whole toy area really, and was obviously the only bit of the store any of the staff cared about given the general mess or everything but toys.

I'm gutted that 'woolies' has gone, even though the last time I went in there was probably early 80s
This was half their problem - nostalgia and rose tinted specs.

Loads of people came out of the woodwork bemoaning the loss of Woolworths but when asked whether they used it regularly or when the last time was they bought anything in there it turned out they hardly ever went there and the last purchase was years ago!

Nostalgia won't keep businesses running.

Anyway, no I don't miss Woolworths. For me, it lost its relevance years before it closed down. Other retailers, on and offline managed to do what Woolworths did, but better.

The closest to Woolworths we have now locally is Wilko, who do what they do well, at reasonable prices, in generally well-laid out stores.

When people say they miss Woolies I think they really mean they miss the 70s/80s.

I must admit when I read the thread title and started thinking about rushing round Woolworths on Christmas eve in 1974 getting my last minute wrapping paper etc I got a warming rush of nostalgia but, towards the end, woolies was a shadow of it's former self and nobody wanted what they offered.
Wilkinsons is an almost identical set up to old-style woolworths and I get ( almost ) the same warm feeling when I go in there at Christmas time.
But, tbh, I rarely shop in real shops anymore. I do most of my shopping online. A sad but true sign of the times.

As soon as mp3s and pirate music of 2001 onwards came about and the recession caused by 9/11 kicked in, Woolworths went into a hospice.

Supermarkets starting to sell everything was also another nail in Woolworths' coffin. The late 90s - early 2000s is when supermarkets really got into selling DVDs, electricals, CDs, small homewares etc

Coming from a small town, I do miss Woolworths.

We've got Factory Shop instead now, which is okay, but not nearly as good choice.

I do miss it yes, it reminds me of childhood Saturdays shopping with Mum in town. Using my pocket money to buy hairslides on the Ladybird stand. Sweets from the pick n mix, and the general diversity of Woolies, everything from a washing up bowl to a hairdryer.
