If Netflix made their own smart TV mini box or perhaps more ideally a little Netflix streaming HDMI stick would it be potentially popular, it perhaps would go down the route of the Amazon Fire Stick and be something that could be used for BBC IPlayer, ITV Hub, Youtube etc, so I guess it would compete with the Fire Stick.

I also would potentially like to see thanks to the awkwardness of series & films on Netflix coming and going, maybe some sort of way to buy them to keep as well, as Amazon do, it's all quite expensive, but you could secure a show or film you like.

Netflix must have seen Amazon do that and wonder whether they could branch out into buy and keep themselves, perhaps a scheme like Sky's where you would also be sent a Blu-Ray in the post.

There is very little point in Netflix getting involved in set top boxes or sticks as their app appears on almost every set top box/smart TV or media centre whereas Amazon don't. Revenue is driven by streaming subscriptions and for Netflix that is key because they are under considerable pressure to increase subscription revenue to maintain content acquisition and production.

The biggest frustrations with Amazon is that their app isn't available on all of the best selling set top/media centres. It isn't available on Apple TV which sells millions, probably one of the best and not available on one of the most popular and powerful media computers the Nvidia Shield which will handle any file thrown at it and handles Plex transcoding better than most, certainly at the same price. Buy virtually any smart TV, media centre, set top box and you can access Netflix.

Amazon also behaves a little like Apple in operating a closed eco system, it doesn't allow official apps such as Kodi, Tidal, Qobuz. Whilst Kodi has a bad reputation in as far as third party add ons are used to stream content from illegal sites, the media software is argubaly still the leader and those such as myself paired with the Amazon Fire TV handles your media, movies, videos, photos, TV, music better than anything else including Plex or Emby.

What would benefit everyone is allowing all boxes, media centres to have dedicated Amazon, Netflix and dedicated media apps available. It is a constant frustration that some have to use more than one or try to circumvate Amazon by sideloading unofficial apps. Subscription revenue after all is far more important than sales of sticks and boxes.

I agree with David and would add that I think the market is already incredibly crowded with sticks and boxes already. There are the various Roku devices, Fire TVs, Apple TV, Nexus TV, Shield TV, Now TV, the list goes on, plus all those cheap generic Chinese boxes and sticks that look similar to the branded ones but differ in various ways. Add to that the fact that now even the cheapest of TVs feature rudimentary smart functionality and these boxes and sticks will become irrelevant as the baseline standard of smart tvs gets better.

With peoples attention split so many ways, I think a new box/stick even by a huge operation like Netflix would really struggle to find it's place...
