If you have treasured recordings that you cannot find elsewhere, then paying someone to help retrieve them is a good idea if you are not technical. Do ask for a price at the shop before they start. Alternatively they may check it before they do anything for free then give you cost options. If there is little of value to you in the recordings, do weigh up the cost of fixing, as this money could go to a more modern and new machine. Major retailers like Argos have Freeview HD twin tuner and internet smart machines from £130.
As to an internal menu option to format HDD, this normally would wipe existing recordings, but may resolve issues and get you back up and running. Again if you have no real value to existing recordings then consider that option. Consult your recorders manual on this, or again check on line.
As the quality to a scart connection is lower and the nature of the connection, you may well find that the encryption does not effect the output as it would on the HDMI cable. If you have a DVD Recorder and are happy with the quality, perhaps if the shop can get it working for awhile for a small cost, then you can back up forever whatever it is you would miss.
