Best supermarket-baked bread
Which Supermarket does the best in-store baked bread in your opinion?
It has to be Morrisons: their bread just seems to be better than any other supermarket I've tried. Very good French sticks (The best range), and their wheat, spelt & Rye bread is very nice. The worst is Asda; often underbaked and still doughy. |

Haha!
I can't vote in your poll because I have never tried Waitrose or Morrisons. I have tried Sainsbury's and Tesco and liked them both (usually their artisan bread at the end of the day when it's cheap) but I wouldn't recommend Asda normal range - I've never tried their top of the range bread and don't know if they do a artisan range. Sometimes supermarket bakery bread has a chemical taste to it, which I have always thought to be it coming into contact with surface cleaning products. It's really off-putting and spoils the whole taste for me. |

It certainly won't be Asda as they seem incapable of baking wholemeal bread to make it even edible. The first time I ever bought it I thought it was really tasty, but ever since it has been like raw dough in the middle and the entire loaf collapses in on itself after 24 hours.

Actually, you are missing Lidl. In my experience they are actually the best. Don't know whether it's the continental heritage, or the fact that a lot of their branches are high turnover, so the bread is always fresh, but they are a cut above the others. Marks & Sparks are also good, but they only have the full range in a small number of branches.

I always find that although Lidl fresh-baked rolls have a lovely texture, they are actually very disappointing taste-wise.

I haven't done the poll because I don't have that variety of supermarkets so 99% comes from Sainsburies.
But I do think their well fired loaf is the nicest bread ever. |

I am going to say Co-op as their baked bread is often vegan (also their dougnuts are vegan too)!

It depends on the bakery and staff.
In my local area, Sainsburys is better than the others. Morrisons comes close. Tesco is awful. But if I drive ten miles to another Tesco, their bakery is superb. Better than my local Sainsburys. |

I usually have Branston but in an emergency I will get the Co-op ones from the corner shop and they are perfectly acceptable.

Just for the record, Branston is the only brand of baked beans I will never buy again.

Out of our local supermarket branches - Sainsbury's and Morrisons are probably the best, followed by Lidl. Tesco and ASDA are both dreadful, the loaves are never baked well enough, the crust is soft and the inside is always doughy.

Morrisons for me, well some of it, their hedgehog bread is nice, but their rolls can be a bit hit and miss.
i got some bread from Lidls a few weeks back and that was ok, even if it is only baked there and not produced. non supermarket bread, there is a stall at our local retail market and they sell a seeded batch loaf and it is one of the most tastiest bread i have had, sadly it is a bit expensive to buy too much of, so I get one now and again. I also make my own bread. |
