Robert Rinder unfulfilled potential or maybe just not that good?

After seeing the judge in week one I thought this guy could have real shot at going a long way in the competition but few weeks since then he's been a bit of a let down to me.He seems to do quite a few of the same moves and expressions, no matter which dance it is and just does not seem to be changing.

Do you think he has it in him to produce some really great dances or will he just fall by the wayside?

He may be paying the price of going down the 'character' route. For some reason character performers are often viewed as being second tier.

Having said that there are plenty of contestants in the competition who are dancing better then he does at present.

I think unfulfilled potential due to being the comedy contestant.

I thought his VW training looked good, but the stupid theme ruined it.

I get they were going for a Kellie and Kevin oom pah pah theme, but I think he can do a beautiful Ballroom if given the chance.

I think he peaked week 1 and he won't really get any better than he is now. He just doesn't have the innate ability and I think I can sense a bit of frustration in him about that. He's scored exactly the same the last three dances in a row and I can't see him suddenly getting wildly better.

I never really liked him from word go. Yes he is very out there and his facial expressions are something to behold but I never felt he was much of a dancer and nothing that he has done since the first dance has made me think anything different. I did find it interesting that Craig and Darcey were pushing him to be more serious and Len said no - keep doing the comedy otherwise you might go out - (or words to that effect).

I can't say I've been a huge fan of Oksana's choreography (assuming it's all her's) over the last couple of weeks. I don't feel it's really shown all JR has to offer. She seems to like lifts/tricks and the routines have lacked a little depth for me. I'd like to see him do a classic waltz or foxtrot just to see what he can really do when everything is stripped back.

He's just not that good - he wasn't even good week 1, I have no idea why so many people went crazy over his mess of a routine.

And from what I've seen so far I don't rate Oksana as a choreographer at all - that Viennese Waltz was horrendous.

I think he cant dance hence the comedy

We've seen this pattern before with people who start better than expected but then don't actually make much progress. Anyway, like Greg Rutherford I feel he's already won in that his profile is so much bigger now than it was pre-Strictly.

With time I think he could progress into a decent dancer but I don't think there is enough time.

I just wish they'd let him do a proper, straight (no pun intended) dance with no daft props or silly costumes. When he and Oksana were actually in hold for the VW his dancing seemed perfectly good to me.

I hate the way some contestants are forced to be "comedy" participants. I suppose they don't have a lot of say in the matter when they sign up, though.

He is a half decent dancer but there are a few who are significantly better than him and the problem for him going down funny character route is that Ed Balls has got that spot stitched up.

Same here. He always makes me smile though, but I do feel the 'comedy' angle is getting in the way a bit of him being viewed as a decent competitor.

I's a disgrace what those producers are asking him to do week after week , trying to make him into a funny clown with those ridiculous costumes . What a travesty to ruin what could have been a lovely, classy VW with that stupid costume and antics .

I believe Rob has the makings of a good dancer if given a chance .

Not to mention that appalling music for a VW .

If you look at Robert and Oksana's dances, you can see how much Robert is improving week on week:

- the frantic chaînés turns in week 1 compared with the neat pirouettes at the start of the VW in week 4
- the strange hand shapes in week 1 & 2 were gone in week 3 and 4
- the OTT facial expressions in week 1 more under control in week 4

Robert still has a lot to learn, but you can clearly see him taking on board the judges feedback and working really hard to apply Oksana's excellent teaching.

To me, it's what Strictly is all about - learning to dance.

I feel like he's been stitched up - I'd like to see anyone pull off The Flintstones and Boom Bang-a-Bang. He's my favourite but even he couldn't make those work for me.

Hopefully we can keep him in until he can show the rest of the viewers what he can do. Rinderites unite.

I find him painful to watch but he is improving slowly. He makes so many mistakes though, unless he sorts that out he won't go very far.

Just not that good for me but I am really enjoying seeing him enjoying himself and improving week on week.

If the comedy element wasn't there we'd probaly be able to judge for certain whether he had potential. He can dance (in the sense he's not a lost cause) but when he's playing the fool in dances the attnetion paid to that can mean sacrfices to other areas.

I think he's entertaining, but I would like him to really channel his enthusiasm in ways that are not just comedy directed. Obviously it really worked in his first dance so maybe he and Oksana think this is their survival trait, but I think even Oksana would prob like to choreography more varied (mooded) dances, so she and Judge should together really think about mixing it up. Of course if the Beeb give him future comedy themed characters it might be hard for them to shake, but I think it would be good entertainment to see if he can dance seriously in charatcer as well as technique.

I think he has potential but we won't see it. He's one of these people who may need more than a week to do a good routine, but more importantly the producers won't let him have a straightforward theme or music choice. Shades of Mark Benton, who begged to do something 'straight' but was shoe-horned into someone's weird idea of Komedy Kontestant.

It's rather sad. He and Ed are in the same boat, though Ed at least did a fairly straight waltz. While I'm sure both are glad about the boost to their profiles, I'm sure when they signed up they thought they might learn a dance routine or two, not an advanced course on prop interaction.

No he's not very good, but because it's a light entertainment reality show where the most popular celeb, not the best dancer, gets the votes then he could reach the final.

At first I thought the comic elements in his dances were obscuring his dance strengths, but I now suspect they were actually obscuring his dance weaknesses. He moves his arms with great theatricality but he doesn't move them with grace or musicality, and he's still quite clompy. I think if he did a dance straight, so to speak, we'd be left seeing someone who's a pretty ordinary dancer up against a line up of very good dancers.

SPOT ON

he was very good in the first week but has levelled out and if anything gone backwards as others have improved

maybe HE feels more comfortable dancing as a "character"............

I think he can dance, I am getting a little bored of the comedy element I have to admit as I would just like to see him dance - same goes for other contestants too - not just Robert

maybe they will knock the comedy on the head now some of the judges has mentioned it

I think he has great potential and can improve

I love him btw
