Before we as a family got a tv I used to go each week to my cousins home and they usually had crossroads on, I was fascinated with it, I think ladies name was Amy, she kept forgetting her lines and sometimes the microphone would drop into sight. There was a time too when if they shut a door the entire wall moved.

6 years just about. It all started having to review an eastenders episode for an Essay in English. We had to watch that episode in class. Before that I was never that interested and tended to Avoid them.

very curious, but how long time did it take you to get to know the EE characters and "feel confident" - or do you still feel like a "guest" on the square sometimes?

I have started watching lots of soaps recently and would say it takes 6 months to a year. 2 years (like I am with EE) to know most of the important history.

I started watching EE nearly two years ago
Corrie and Emmerdale just over a year ago
Hollyoaks and Home and Away 6 months ago
Neighbours, Doctors, Casualty, Holby City and River City all less.

(Although I have seen a number of Casualty episodes before)

That works about right, because I dont know alot of iconic Corrie and Emmerdale characters and history

crikey - 6-12 months to be familiarized with place, characters etc. - someone wrote here about murders/deaths - and that Hollyoaks had a lot (coming close to Midsomer) anyway, looked up Hollyoaks .. crikey gave up. Will just stick to EE (+ Midsomer Murders & Spooks)

You have started on a lot - did you ever get characters mixed up - one you thought did Corrie suddenly "turned up" in Hollyoaks, and you thought, WTF ..

Doubt I'll start a new soap - but if I were which one would be the easiest to access? (British not Aussie - and not hospital ones - Holby/Casualty etc.)

I got confused mostly with Corrie and Emmerdale. I always thought Anna Windass and Mary Taylor in Corrie were the same person for 6 months. Also Leyla and Kerry in Emmerdale. I mainly watch them on their apps. EE, Doctors, Casualty, Holby and Doctors on BBC Iplayer, Emmerdale and Corrie on the ITV App, the Australian ones on My5, Hollyoaks on All4. And what do you mean 'easiest to access'? Do you not live in the UK? The only soap that might be difficult to acces is River City which is only on TV in Scotland but you can still watch it on Iplayer from anywhere in the UK.

no, not british or live in the uk - but what i meant with access: which is the "simplest" one, smallest cast, quick to get to know .... I can see them all live on filmon - so no problem there.

Can you access River City? Iso it has the smallest cast and I have got into it faster than I would have thought after watching it a couple of months. There is still lots I dont know about it though. But if I had to choose between Corrie and Emmerdale I would say Emmerdale is easiest to get into. They have got a great dementia story right now with an old man Ashley and his younger wife Laurel.



Edit: River City is on at 8pm on BBC Scotland on Tuesdays for an hour

only interested in British ones - which leaves me with Corrie, Hollyoaks and Emmerdale (not interested in hospital ones) - so really, which of the three would be the easiest to get to know ?

Anyway, I personally would say Hollyoaks but alot of people dont like having so many murders, explosions and affairs and prefer more realistic drama like EE is now. If you dont like Hollyoaks then I would say Emmerdale. I found it the easier to understand than Corrie.

so, may attempt Hollyoaks - that's more me - murders, explosions etc. - and nearly as many as in Midsomer Murders. The little I have read - takes place in a suburb somewhere, mostly students, has the highest turnover of cast - so won't bump into another Dot, Ian or whatever. Will read first, then perhaps try and find some recent ones on youtube.

If you like murders and explosions you will love Hollyoaks. It is my favourite soap. It is one of the newers soaps having only started in 95 so less history to catch up onz

It has been toned down a lot, you will be glad they have also stopped using the hospital set as much

There is lots of cast but there are some long term characters such as Tony Hutchinson, Jack & Darren Osbourne, Cindy and Tom Cunningham.

Its worth a watch though cos pretty much the storylines usually move fast paced and so its easy to just start watching. They do long running plots and about now would ge a good time to start as long ones are ending and new ones starting

Emmerdale is my favourite but from what you have said Hollyoaks sounds like it would suit you best.
