But I'm considering buying an Ultra HD TV and for streaming, I have to get a faster connection. I don't fancy buying physical media to play, so I'm stuffed as using 4G would be far too expensive.
Yes, 4K UHD is probably the "killer app" for faster broadband. I gather you need 20 to 25mbps of consistent throughput to stream 4K UHD reliably.

Essentially this means you need 30mbps or faster of speedtest speed - so my 50mbps seems to work well with Netflix and Amazon 4K content.

There are not that many residential users who are brothered about the potential max speed that they can get from FTTC, let alone FTTP.
I think higher FTTC speeds matter can matter in households where lots of concurrent online activity may happen.

I can live with ADSL to a degree, but it is a pain if I need to upload video to YouTube (when I switch to 4G).

Don't buy a UHD tv.
Buy it but don't expect to stream anything to it.
Pay oodles to get FTTP.
Move house.
