iCloud / iPhone 6+

Hey

I have recently upgraded my iCloud account so that I can store all my photos on there and free up space on my phone. I have downloaded the iCloud Drive app to my iPhone and 'backed up' my phone to iCloud.

I still cannot see my photos in the iCloud Drive app?
Also if I select a photo, it doesn't come up with the option to send it to the iCloud. It does when I am on my iPad.

Any help would be fantastic thank you.

What you seem to be trying to do is already part of IOS, is totally automatic and does not use iCloud Drive at all!

Just turn on (in Settings->Photos&Camera) "ICloud Photo Library" and "Optimize iPhone Storage"

This will upload all new photos to iCloud and then, when the iPhone is short of space, reduce the version on the handset to thumbnail size for the indices in the Photos App. When you access one of the low resolution images it automatically recovers the full-resolution version again.

Works brilliantly for me! On my iPad (which has 64Gb) I have the "Optimze iPad storage" option off - so it keeps full-resolution photos on that device)

Thank you. I am clueless about it all.
So I can't move photos onto my iCloud Drive from my iPhone?
I have switched on those iCloud settings now. Where do I see where the photos have gone?

Photos will go to "iCloud Photos" (which you can see by, for example, logging in using a web-browser at icloud.com) and automatically to all other iDevices with "Photo Library" turned on. Photos only get automatically uploaded when connected to WiFi.

You probably CAN use iCloud Drive if you want - but you seemed to be manually copying a build-in part of Apple's iCloud system!

iCloud Drive is more for Documents.

If you have turned on the relevant settings then your photos will be in the iCloud too.
You just keep accessing photos as normal through the photos app.

Personally I use the Google photos app because it's free and unlimited.

It only costs me £0.79/month for 50Gb of iCloud storage. This is far more than I need but I don't then have to manually do anything! Photos get downsized and recovered as needed.

I don't have to do anything with the Google Photos app either, it backs up in the background. It's great for creating shared albums and has other neat tricks involving location data, auto-generated things like stitched panoramas, slideshow clips or suggested effects on pictures. It's also more easily accessible on a multi-device basis, it provides a smashing web interface for use on PCs.

Free is still cheaper than £0.79 a month which equates to £9.50 a year. That first tier is great but what happens when you breach 50GB (which is especially easy to do once you start taking HD video?

Google Photos remains free whilst the next icloud tier is £2.49 a month which is £30 a year.

I don't personally like Google Photos as it ALWAYS "reprocesses" every image (even under 16MP in size) - unless you use paid storage!!! IOS 10 now does many of the neat photo tricks as well.

I cannot ever see me running out of 50Gb as my present solution can be mixed with others - like archiving years old photos!
