Turbot and brill
I asked a local fishmonger about turbot as it keeps featuring on Great British Menu but i've never seen it for sale
. He was singing its praises but said brill is very similar. Unfortunately he doesn't get either in very often. Has anyone ever had either? |

Thanks grassmarket. I'll pass if it's that expensive!
PS I won't pass on what he said about imported river cobbler. |

It's a great delicacy, very expensive and rare. It's a large flatfish. Looking on the internet, people are asking £40-50 a kilo at the cheapest! So not a fish to fry for breakfast or batter with chips. Cornwall seems to be the best place to get it, but if you live far away from there you'd probably need to order from a specialist. There's a big premium for wild-caught over farmed as well, most of what you see will be farmed.

love turbot, my favourite fish but only had it in restaurants.
It does seem strange me that some people here, who always seem to keep other posters in check in the Food and Drink forum, are surprised that restaurants can purchase food wholesale more cheaply that we can retail. |
