Trouble transferring material from PC to USB-3 flashdrive

I've legitimately paid for and downloaded some concert footage to my PC. The file is 6.91GB in size and the film footage is in HD quality.

I have a Kingston 32GB USB-3 memory stick onto which I have been trying to copy the above film footage, so that I can transfer it to my HD recorder's hard drive and subsequently burn it to a Blu-ray disc.

In spite of the fact that there is loads of available space on the flash drive, whenever I attempt to 'Copy and Paste' the file, a window comes up proclaiming that 'The file 'Title.mp4' is too large for the destination file system'.

I've even tried downloading the original material (you can have up to 5 downloads for the money) directly to the memory stick, but it comes up as 'Interrupted' before 5GB has even downloaded.

Any advice out there, please?

The stick is probably formatted with a FAT type file system. This has a limit on the size any individual file can be. If it's FAT32 then the limit is 4GB or thereabouts.

You could try formatting the stick with the NTFS file system as commonly used by Windows. That would easily allow you to copy the file over. However it may not be recognised by the recorder. Without knowing the make or model of recorder it is not possible to comment on whether it will recognise the NTFS file system.

If the recorder cannot handle NTFS then your only option is to use some software to either edit the file into smaller chunks or recode it to get below the 4GB limit. Obviously recoding has the potential to lose some quality.

Thanks for your helpful and comprehensive reply, Chris.

If it helps, my HD Recorder is a Panasonic DMR-BWT740 ... how would I know whether it can read an NTFS file type?

Page 10 of the manual

Quote:
“USB memories support FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS file systems.”

If you've filed yours in the trash can download it by putting the model number into here
