Tonight has been my favourite so far. James had some good lines. My favourite was Is this a sign? Yes that people aren't meant to write with their mouths. It was very dark but in a way I felt bad as she obviously has mental health issues so should be treated. Well acted.

They were both good (but especially Gillian) and this episode was far better than the previous two. So many good lines - my favourite being Emma/Gillian's 'Couples get used to each other's little foibles' (or something like that).

I am not as qualified on this as others, however, I did watch back when Jack Sugden was in it, and I don't think this controversial point is as much of a retcon as people think. Jack may have been modern in certain ways for someone of his age, given that he was a Yorkshire farmer, and may well have passed the time of day with the likes of Zoe, but to discover your son in a compromising position with another boy? It would be a shock to most parents, at least initially, and many would have had an extreme reaction.

My best friend, not in the least homophobic, and I got into a conversation and she was asked what she would do if one of her sons was gay, the colour drained from her, and although she tried to put it nicely, it was definitely homophobic remarks in that moment and it took me years to get her to recognise it. People can be funny about these things when it comes to their own kids, no matter how gay friendly they may initially appear.

The fact that there was no mention of it and it was off screen makes it obvious that it's just been inserted but not necessarily a retcon.

I agree 100%. This was a completely made up fanfic infused plot. If Robert confesses he lied about his father I will forgive the producers for trying to change history but I wait in vain

I agree, I don't think it's inconceivable that Jack might have had some prejudice, although as I' ve said in other posts I think he would have tried to be supportive. Also, how old was this farmhand? How would Jack feel about his fifteen year old having sex full stop ( to say nothing of doing it under his roof)? There's s more than one factor at play. It's s a shame it came across a bit insensitively, in the context of an episode that was really a fast paced actioner. Perhaps it should have been explored in a bit more detail.

It's total blox! Homosexuality was illegal at that time and had a huge stigma. Emmerdale, which was much gentler then, would never have hinted at it far from shown it, especially from 7 to 7.30

I do understand that these two polarise opinions on here, as I am a relative newcomer to Emmerdale having had about 10 or so years break, I don't have the prejudices of knowing the characters (or even the ones I do know I have no idea what they have been up to for years) or having made judgements on many of them. This allows me to almost look at it with fresh eyes and I found Mondays episode really well acted and fast paced, I didn't much enjoy Tuesday although I wouldn't say the episode was a flop, just not to the standard of the previous evening, and haven't managed to see Wednesdays yet.

Thanks for your reply Glendarroch, I find commenting on a soap that I am so out of date with very daunting amongst the experts, and the daily's far too fast paced for me at my stage of knowing the characters, half the time I have no clue what people are talking about.

First of all, it's either going to be James or Emma that dies, if it is James then Emma can still be in it because no one will know that she held him hostage and gets to play the grieving widow.
Second, I think it's been good but when you compare it to hollyoaks POV week, I think that was fine much better. Emmerdale have done it in a slightly more inconspicuous way than hollyoaks but I preferred hollyoaks way of doing it. I also do think that they told us like there would be huge differences with like incidental music and stuff but it's literally just been a song on the radio that doesn't even seem to fit with the scene.

Its been a fantastic week. Love the way its been shot, if only it could stay like that, and the focus on a small number of characters. And a small period of time. I do find they require a second viewing, or maybe that's just cause I watch them in the morning when I get home from work, so I missed a lot of the subtle hints and crossovers first tie being half asleep, and how all the stories are intertwining towards the final two episodes.

And while I know there's nods to films, I don't watch that genre so I don't get a lot of them.

And while we all know at least 2 characters are set to depart shortly, I do wonder if theres going to be another shock casualty of this.

I have been wondering if there will be two deaths. We have been told that Bill Ward is leaving so it would make sense if he dies and Emma lives on to start killing off a few other people that annoy her. And I have the feeling that Robert will go as well. All will be revealed!!!!!!!

I doubt there will even be an acknowledgement from them. They only care about keeping Robron fans happy.

I's hardly that big a deal, could be passed off as the character Robert lying and embellishing his past to gain sympathy from Aaron.

On the whole Emmerdale has been good this week the little bits of humour from Paddy and Marlon worked well, there were even smatterings of dark humour in the Emma and James bit so far so good.

But sheepie, they have to both have bad horrible Dads who abused them regularly, because it makes them SOUL MATES.

Actually, typing that has just made me realise how much of a rip off Wobwon are of the Brendan/Ste story on Hollyoaks. No wonder they've got so many of the same fans - maybe it's the Victim of Evil Dads thing. Except this time they get the "Happy Ending" the first lot craved but didn't get.

Anyway, we now have to accept, as trevor tiger loves to remind us, that Poor Ickle Bobby is a saint who was regularly beaten within an inch of his life for his essential gayness by Abusive Nasty Thuggish Dad Jack. He was probably sexually abused by Diane as well, so sad. *writes fanfic*

Last night was great!

I found the Emma/James one far too OTT and silly.
Also the Marlon and Paddy one, why the hell were two grown men scared to go into the woods that was part of a campsite. Ridiculous are we supposed to find them funny?? I hope Pierce does them both in, he is the only character in this scenario i actually like!
I liked the Robron episode though.

As someone else said the recent Hollyoaks POV week was much much better.

There was nothing in the conversation between Robert & Aaron, on Monday evening, to support the contention that Jack beat Robert because he was gay. Robert said himself that nothing had happened and that Jack had leathered him for skiving. It's just Robert's interpretation that Jack knew that he was gay (well, bi, according to Robert himself, in another scene) and that could well have arisen from the guilt and inadequacy that Robert felt. Furthermore, Aaron himself said that he didn't think that Jack was like that and Robert agreed. There was nothing to impy that Jack was a raging homophobe who beat Robert on a regular basis.
