Who actually likes the cheesy training videos we see on Strictly now

I can't say I'm hugely bothered by them, they have to show something while they change the sets around and we see plenty of real training footage on ITT anyway. I imagine they would have done focus groups or whatever they do to decide these things and concluded it pleases the kids which I don't have a problem with. It is a show for the whole family after all. Besides it's a bit like the postcards they have between the performances at Eurovision, I doubt many people really watch them anyway.

Not everyone has time to watch ITT, I have an 8 year old and 6.30 is her 20 min tV time before her bath. At 8, she can't stand the VT's either so who is is aimed at???

I find them infantile, patronising and a waste of the dancers time and effort, not to mention the cost of camera crews sent off to peculiar places to film anything that may have a tenuous connection to dance - or not!

In my experience, unless we are talking about toddlers, kids are pretty discriminating about what they watch.

Few are entertaining, but if I have ancoice woukd prefer proper training footage.
Maybe that's not show worthy.

Think of the training time they take up.

I join the 'they don't really bother me' group here. I really just can't get that worked up about them. They're daft but harmless.

If they play any role it's in letting the celeb show their personality a bit more which is an important part of gaining votes (particularly from people who don't watch ITT).

Good point.

Suppose they're also there to entertain Strictly's 'family' audience.

I tend to fast forward them unless they're about something interesting.

Is it my imagination, or are they showing a little bit more training this year in the VTs?

I think that's exactly what they don't do. They can't really show anything about themselves except how bad their acting skills are. When it used to be them being filmed in training they could show their natural humour and we could see the real relationship between celeb and pro. I suppose these scripted 'comedy' VTs maybe help those celebs who don't really have any (TV) personality to show, or help them hide an unpleasant one.

Personally I don't think the training VTs show anything personality wise that the person being on the show on a Saturday night doesn't already get across. The silly VTs are just another facet.

But, as I said, I'm not particularly fussed about them so they don't get on my wick as they clearly do with some people.

I loathe the silly VTs and just feel embarassed for everyone involved (including whoever dreams them up). I'd prefer to see more from the training room - not so much because I want the dance revealed, but because we learn more about the partnership.

Rightly or wrongly, I feel the set up VTs are an attempt to keep the reality of the training room at arms length from the viewers and allow the PTB to steer the storylines as they wish. (Or maybe they just do it cuz it's cheap 😏 ...)

I might be misremembering Ye Olden Tymes, but I felt we saw relationships develop naturally; we saw some bickering; when they were tired and frustrated and, occasionally, open hostility; we saw flirtation and falling in love; could tell who was Strictly business and who had become genuine friends. I'd never have liked Gavin and Katya if I'd just watched them dance, but their training room banter made me love them. Same with Kara and Artem. She was a beautiful dancer anyway, but their relationship developed before our eyes and that was a huge part of the attraction. With a lot of the couples these days - unless I'm especially invested and work harder to find out about them - I just don't have a picture of who they are.

I can fast forward through the VTs, so they don't have to irritate me, but I do feel sad about what we miss out on as viewers

I completely agree. Gavin and Katya are a great example of humour arising naturally rather than scripted 'comedy'. I had a look at some old VTs on YouTube to see if I was misremembering

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ludbu5NWwB4

We definitely got to see more of the ups and downs of training and how they were getting on with each other. Although they occasionally showed them visiting home or doing their normal work, it was them being themselves rather than being chased by a mariachi band, wearing daft costumes or seeing heads in their microwave. I think the VTs now shortchange the viewers and the contestants.

Oh, that Kartem compilation was a trip down memory lane. Fights, love, joy, frustration, laughs, injury porn. Loved it!

I tend to record Strictly and It Takes Two, so I can fast forward through the bits I know I will find uninteresting, I just want to concentrate on the dances, that is what I watch Strictly for.

I do the same Sara, my vote if there was one would be to stop all the silliness.

I don't need to see them 'training' on a ship or the London Eye or at a zoo or wherever....made the last two venues up...personally if they need a filler for the programme I would rather see something to do with the hair, make up, costumes which are featured fleetingly on ITT, or the band/singers, any relevant really.

That is a minute and a half we now only get 1 minute before they head off for the outside filming. So we have lost 30 seconds of training.

I like them They can be silly and they can be entertaining...so Strictly in a nutshell if you ask me.

Training footage for the whole of the VT for each couple would just spoil the dance and actually look too samey with one couple after another looking happy/sad/annoyed with how the routine is going.

Strictly is there to entertain and I'd say the VTs do that. Ed's one as the Mask had me howling with laughter even before his great dance.

Training from this week.

When I look at that, I see relationships developing and lots of interesting potential for making really good VTs from training - Ed Ball's part of the clip in particular - but all of the pairings can be made entertaining in the same way that they make Come Dine With Me entertaining.

I hate them, so I always watch on a slight delay so that I can fast forward through everything except the actual dances. Doesn't everyone?

Not a fan of them; too scripted, contrived and banal. Bring back the actual proper training videos. I mean, are the celebs really so good that they can afford time off to skip around London landmarks etc ? Heaven only knows what they'll have to do on Halloween week. Give them the time to train and let's have a great(er) Saturday show as a result.

The clips are edited to encourage people to think that. Why some people think that what you see on TV is the absolute truth? They may get along fine, but I'd guess not always as well as what is projected.
The BBC consider it important for viewers to have favourites, so they will continue to follow them throughout series.

If the clips were completely honest and showed just even a minor less than "convivial exchange," it'd be seized on by some on here, with a couple of hundred, "yes it was, no it wasn't ," comments.

"We all get along so well together."
Yeah!
That'd wouldn't always be the case amongst the cast of a big production.

Me too!
They got that one right - but overall, I think the standard of VTs this year has been poor.
