No speaker signal from stereo amp

I have a Technics midi system owned from new and never had any faults with it until now.

It's been unused for quite a while but on powering up recently i got zero sound through the speakers. My first thought was the wire to the speakers had possibly fractured or broke so i've just replaced with new but still no sound.

Plug headphones in and the sound is there and everything else works, record deck, tuner, equaliser, amp, cd player and cassette unit..just nothing from the external speakers.

Both speakers are fine and ok and the whole system, whilst old, is in mint condition.

Any geeks know whats wrong?

Could be any number of reasons. The power amplifier stage could be dead. There could be something shorting out the speaker terminals triggering a protection circuit. Could only take a single stray strand of copper wire to short the terminals out. So check round the terminals very carefully.

Depending on how the headphones are wired to mute the speakers there could be a fault with that so it thinks headphones are plugged in even when they are not. For instance it could use a switch built into the socket to detect headphones which due to gunge build up appears to be in the open (ie headphones in) position.

I presume you have checked the speakers make a noise on a known working amp?

Another favourite is some amps have switches to select between two speaker outputs. More than once I've been caught out when both switches are in the OFF position or the "wrong" pair selected and wondered why it's all gone quiet

But without physical access to the system it is difficult to diagnose properly.

You know what i'm about to say here don't you?!!!

A mega moment!!

Just gone back and looked at those switches on the damn amp and both were switched out!

It doesn't help with the amp and button switches both being black. Can't say i should have gone to Specsavers as i've been wearing glasses for eight years now - which is about the last time i had it up and running!

Cheers for that Chris!

Yeah you are right about that. I worked it out earlier on it's 29 years old!

Bought it brand new though and it set me back £800 at the time. I needed a system with a deck as i've got tons of vinyl which i like to get out now 'n then and will never part with.
