Amazon Echo

“Amazon Echo is a hands-free speaker you control with your voice. Echo connects to the Alexa Voice Service to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather and more. Prime members can also ask Alexa to order eligible products they've ordered before and many Prime products (coming soon). All you have to do is ask.”

Has anyone got one of these yet? Is it any good?

Yep. Had mine since day one in the UK and love it. So easy just to walk in at the end of the day and request some music, without having to walk to another sound system, select music, link up, switch on etc. Setting reminders is very easy, as is adding shopping items.

The microphone is pretty sensitive; sometimes activates Alexa by accident if the key word is mentioned. I occasionally amuse myself by asking odd questions / ask for jokes etc. There are lots of times, however, where she can't help and just refers you to a Bing search.

I say "Good Morning" every day and get greeted with a fun fact, historical nugget etc. And saying "Good Night", gets you a nice "sweet dreams". It's a bit of fun. She's the other lady in my life. Not sure how my girlfriend will feel about this when we move in together shortly!!

I've partnered it with some of the 'skills' via the accompanying app, and Uber works fine (tested once). Haven't quite smart-homed up yet, but will invest in some wifi plugs in due course. As a bluetooth speaker, it's very good by my ears. Loud, clear, reasonable bass and definitely fills my flat. As an Amazon Prime customer with most of my music in Amazon's cloud, it's the perfect partner.

So, a solid purchase for me (particularly at the £99 offer price) and will soon get the Dot for a spare room. I'm sure Alexa's responses and learning will improve over time, but it's good enough and great fun for now.
