It's that time of year for the warming casserole type meals to come home to so please post your favourites.

Mine us chicken casserole. I normally cheat and use a packet mix

Chicken or belly pork steam roasted..... Chopped oinons and mushrooms at the bottom, creating juices for the gravy.

Pork. I often just put in a lump of pork, & some onion & celery some coffee grounds & a drop of wine, let it cook all day then in the evening, pull it a part with some forks ( shred it)& add some bbq sauce to make pulled pork, That is great with anything.

This is another favorite.http://allrecipes.com/recipe/222403/...a-slow-cooker/

beef stew is also good.

My husband recently did a beef slow cooker dish. He used beef (obviously &#128518, mixed veg, lentils, stock, dried herbs and a little bit of chorizo. The lentils did sort of disintegrate but it thickened the dish up and tasted lovely

Basically you can just chuck stuff in and let it cook for 8-10 hours and it is usually great. Cheap cuts of meat are best as it is a waste to put really good stuff in there, but the long slow cooking tenderises the tough meat.

Easiest one is to put in stewing steak, chopped onion, carrots and tatties and any other veg lying around. Stock cube, season, bay leaves, herbs, bit of water and leave for 8-10 hours.

Another great one is a whole chicken. Just cut all the strings so it's a bit looser, maybe put a whole lemon in the cavity, season, put it in the pot and leave for about 6 hours. It just falls off the bone and the juice makes a great stock. Also works for chicken drumsticks or thighs.

You will love it, Bex! You can do so much in them, not just stews and casseroles. I highly recommend the book in the link below - loads of excellent recipes.

You can cook joints of meat in it. I always use it for beef and lamb joints. It's falling apart when you're trying to lift it out. Your days of chewing tough meat are gone.

I used mine today.
Popped the ingredients in last night before bed - turned it on at 8am whilst making a morning cuppa in bed.
1.8k diced beef browned first and stirred in flour.
2 large onions sliced
6 carrots chopped
6 parsnips chopped
250ml Merlot
Knorr Rich Beef flavour pot
Knorr Mixed Herb flavour pot
Tablespoon paprika
Couple of glugs of L&P Worcester sauce
Topped up with beef stock to just cover it.
Ready by 3.30pm and the liquor was lovely and rich.
Fed 6 of us with mash and peas before our garden fireworks 👍

The first thing I ever cooked in a slow cooker was simply 1 lamb shank and an onion cut in eighths - no liquid - just to see the results.
About eight hours later the lamb shank slid off the bone and I blitzed the resultant juices with the onion for a lovely sauce/gravy.

Nice! It arrived early enough for me to cook dinner in it I made the beef and pepper stew from a recipe I found online. It was soo good!

Chicken Casserole and Dumplings (finish dumplings under the grill to crispen up and colour).

Creamed Rice Pudding is amazing, but you can end up with so much left over - delicious though.

I know I am the odd one out but I really dislike food from slow cookers. It all comes out tasting exactly the same and I don't like the texture or taste.

So I was about to bin the slow cooker when I read a great tip on another forum - use it to make candles. Waiting for my soy wax to arrive, pleased I can save binning it and using it for something useful

Pretty much the same here. I don't really follow recipes, just chuck whatever meat and veg I have in and leave it for the day. Apart from sausages I don't bother browning meat. A glug of beer or wine helps add extra taste too.

Sorry, I always make slow-cooked rice pudding with pudding rice (had to use Arborio once as a desperate measure and that was lovely too).

Edit: This is a reply to post 15 - problem with using quote button in response.

That's the way - don't let anyone tell you're odd!
Just don't throw a candlelight dinner party.

The more glugs the better I find.
Sometimes when you've really glugged you can just chuck the food in the bin and just glug on.

You'd probably die if you had my mothers as it is so good but deadly fattening. I haven't had it in a very long time probably 12 - 13 years maybe more. It is so delicious.

Tempted to try doing it myself to see if I can find that same taste near Christmas.

Her vanilla ice cream was the same. So creamy, pure white like mr whippy and so silky. Damn, it was some of the best ice cream I had ever tasted. As she had one of those slow machine whippers? Again it was deadly fattening. Haven't had it in over a decade.

Let alone her pancakes, tablet and millionare shortbread. The school children died for it, so much so they pestered their mothers to make it. The mothers said to her they got all this grief because it didn't taste the same as hers. This was why everybody loved raffle day as all this stuff arrived.

I make veg soup in my slow cooker about every 2 weeks. I get 3 massive meals out of it (freeze 2). Just swede, carrot, parsnip, spuds, celery, onion, garlic, tomato, pulses etc. My neighbor bought me the cooker for fixing her pc. I thought it would be cr*p, but it's fantastic. Ditto the breadmaker she got me for another job. So now it's homemade soup + wholemeal bread at my gaff - all down to my kind neighbor !

I haven't made this in awhile but later on today I will be making a spicy mixed meat stew.

1kg cubed beef
1lb cubed lamb
1 red onion
1 red bell pepper
finger chillies
peeled chooped potatoes
onion gravy

Method

brown the meat, onion & 2 finger chillies in a pan and transfer to slow cooker on low, stir in the onion gravy. After 4hrs of cooking, add the chopped potatoes & a couple more finger chillies, add more gravy if need be.

Last time I made this it was delicious and the heat worked really well for a cold night & even spicier on the second night as the oils from the chillies had settled nicely into the gravy, but still had the nice taste of the onion gravy.

Serve with Yorkshire puddings and a crusty roll or French stick.
