The Script suing James Arthur
evkylemeatsix
20-10-2016
The Script are suing James Arthur claiming his #1 song Say You Won't Let Go is a rip off of their hit song The Man Who Can't Be Moved.

When I first heard Arthur's song I immediately thought "where have I heard this before" and now that this has been raised I think they actually do sound so similar.

What are your thoughts??

When i heard his song i assumed he was actually sampling theirs. Clearly he wasn't and a lot of people have noticed the similarity so there must be something in it

I doubt this will get far, At best they will get a credit or they will get paid off

I believe they can only sue for lost royalties which isn't likely to be very much at all.

I don't think you get the point of this legal contest. The money is secondary, it's more about one side protecting their interests against another. They must be confident in winning the case (with costs) in the first place though, as legal cases can be expensive.

if you listen to James Arthur's song instrumental, you can actually sing the scripts lyrics in tune

I thought the song sounded a tiny bit similar to something i heard

James never produced the song so he isn't at fault. It will be the producers being sued. not him.

That's hardly not getting far. Surely that's entirely the result The Script are looking for? Not getting far would be if it was thrown at the first stage as being without merit.

There's a slight similarity I suppose.
Its nowhere near the level of little mix/GRL.

When I heard the song I thought it sounded so familiar. After a couple of minutes I realised it was very similar to a song by The Script.

But a same/similar chord sequence isn't enough to be considered plagiarism. I think James will get away with it. It's not close enough.

Erm...yeah!!!

Try singing the verses of SOTME over the verses in Ugly Heart. They're completely different.

You can literally sing the entire James Arthur song over the top of the above instrumental.

I think Adele needs to sue him too.

It's so similar to Someone Like You I genuinely thought it was cover/homage like Frankie F/U right back when I first heard it.

A total rip-off of a song.

Yes, the verses are almost identical, particularly the chord progressions. I can't believe people haven't been shouting about it.

It's hard enough for bands like The Script who write and compose their own music. Not a fan personally, but it's "acts" like James Arthur who bring shame to the music industry. No talent at all, singing songs wrote and produced by "writing teams" and not to mention the farce that is the X Factor.

Yes of course it is.

Just listened to the instrumental of Say You Won't Let Go and managed to sing The Man Who Can't Be Moved over the top - scarily similar songs.

Considering James Arthur's song sounds like a Jeremy Kyle guest's life story, I much prefer The Man Who Can't Be Moved!

Pop music is so unoriginal and formulaic these days that songs are bound to sound similar at some point

Hardly a shock. This is somebody who won a glorified karaoke contest before this and whose biggest hit was a cover of another artist's song.

The guitar at the start is similar but apart from that there's nothing remotely similar. Man who can't be moved is a very fluid catchy song, this is more dirge - it's stuff like this that makes a mockery of music.

The Script must need some publicity.

SYCO as a label seem to love ripping off other bands.

Look at Shoutout to My Ex, the Little Mix current single which is a very obvious reworking of GRL's Ugly Heart.

Another example is Change My Ticket by One Direction, which copies and pastes all the guitars from The 1975's Girls. Matty Healy even complained about it in the music press, but didn't sue.

The problem is, that Script song is basically a ripoff of loads of others with the same chord progression. It's just a basic light rock chord sequence that's been used time and time again. They won't get anywhere suing James Arthur.
