Emmerdale: Not Unrealistic (Based on real life)
I've seen some people saying that the crash was totally unrealistic. Unfortunately it's not:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_M5_motorway_crash There was an awful crash in 2011 on the M5 between Taunton and Bridgwater. 7 people killed. Clearly this was the inspiration for ED. |

You only have to drive round Leeds or on the nearby m1, m621 or m62 to see horrific crashes everyday! Haven't seen it but iv got caught in the tailbacks there has been an accident every morning this week!
The fog is realistic. Don't know why but Leeds is always shrouded in bloody fog at random times 😂 |

The Edinburgh City Bypass is the same, it's a deathtrap. There seems to be accidents/bumps on it almost every other day.

Emmerdale is higher up in the Dales than Leeds, and odd pockets of fog can happen. It's wierd if you're not used to it

I didn't think it was unrealistic in the slightest. I fact I found it incredibly realistic almost to the point of it being quite frightening. Tram and helicopter crashes are exciting but this to me was scary and traumatic as the constant ongoing crashes felt very real and this feels like something that could happen to any of us that drive on a motorway. It was extremely well done and I honestly can't think of a soap stunt better executed than this. It was amazing drama (and this is coming from an Eastenders fan).
Of course the only unrealistic bit imo is the fact that so many people from the same small village were involved in it but that is easily forgiven for dramatic purposes. |

The only bit I found unrealistic and also very funny was when Ashley watched a car crash into another car and he stood there while something flew off over the top of the car and just missed him, like he didn't even seem phased by it and it just seemed very comedic. Some of the random crashes after also seemed a little stage but the main crash was very good. I also would of liked Ashley's car to explode as they showed it on fire but realistically that would of exploded into a fireball.

I have never read of any pile up caused by someone being pushed off a footbridge

I thought it was as realistic as it could be considering it's a soap. Obviously this is a staged crash and will never be as realistic as a real crash.
I live about 20 minutes from the M5 crash mentioned in the Original post. I was on the motorway on that night travelling in the opposite direction but about 30 mins before the crash happened. It was foggy in places, but not everywhere, we hit thick fog and and then it was clear. I remember clearly that for some reason I wanted to get off the motorway and almost got off the junction before the one I needed, just to get off the motorisation. 30 mins later we heard of the pile up. Awful, really awful. The scene on emerald last night of the entire scene, rememinded me of the footage on the news of the shoreham air disaster. I know a plane crashed into the road on that occasion but the road looked very similar with the crashed cars scattered everywhere |

No but there have been a number where the cause has been morons dropping concrete and the like off bridges and the end result has been pretty similar ie multi vehicle accidents |

As mentioned the only unrealistic thing was that all these neighbours should be at the exact same place at the exact same time independent of each other. Well except for Pearce and Paddy who were totally connected.
That there is a bypass close to the village i am fine with. I grew up in a village about 3 miles from Chelmsford and the A12 upgrade (built about 15 years after our house) is approximately 200 yards away anda you can't really hear it. There are often accidents, sometimes caused by people trying to cross the wretched thing. Idiots do throw things from bridges (though not usually bodies) and them hitting cars below can cause an accident, so can swerving to avoid something on the road. People get distracted, drive too fast, don't leave enough distance between themselves and the next car (only a fool breaks the two second rule), nowhere to drive into to swerve if the lane next to you is occupied, and it is a recipe for disaster. Fog can descend in a pocket like that any time. I found it terrifying as it was ordinary and mundane and could so easily happen. |
