How is the running order decided?

Does it just go off who producers want to keep til the end and who they want out first based on the quality of the dance? Starting to notice a trend of people who are never put in the last 3 of the night bracket and people who never dance in the first half of the show

Producers will ask Kevin to choose which slot would he like and then Aljaz.
Others are given at random.

The show will pretty much always start with a "party starting" dance. An uptempo latin or a quickstep mostly. The last routine will either be very good or a big spectacle that requires cleaning up afterwards (and they do try and share it around the "contenders" as much as possible). Generally the dances will get better as the evening goes on as the show builds to a climax, but it's not exact. If the show has a big name who's getting them a lot of publicity (such as Peter Andre last year or Ed Balls this year) they will tend to go on in the second half, especially early on in the series to avoid the drift to X Factor. They'll also try to organise to avoid having too many of the same "type" (ie "the pretty young girls", "the comedy contestants") on one after the other, and the same with different types of dance (ie they won't have a waltz followed by a waltz). Other than that it's probably just what works in terms of setting things up and taking down sets.

So far this year, the 'saved' couple from the bottom two have been on second the following week. May just be coincidence - wonder where Anastascia will be this week?

Generally a big crowd-pleaser to start the show and also to finish the show. This is only decided at the last minute. Gorka certainly thought he was opening the Saturday night Week 1 show with Tameka but was moved to a mid-show slot (presumably after the dress run). And.... would you believe it... Kevin and Louise opened the show in the end.

To be fair, their jive was excellent.

I think I have read somewhere that they think about X factor as well to try to pull eyeballs away to Strictly in the second half of the show.

Edit: What Monkseal said, basically.

In the early weeks when there are many celebrities, the second and third slots can be 'death slots' as the dances are easily forgotten when the public vote opens. And the producers are very well aware of that.

First on will be a "good un," to get the show off with a bang, but not the pair expected to be the best on the night.
This is because the judges need some "wiggle room" for the marking.
The mark for this first couple will be the benchmark, so better performances can be marked higher (so no "elevens" required) and poorer ones lower.

As Monkseal said but they try to rotate the specific celebs a little bit from week to week. The first couple out is usually a solid 7s or 8s dance to give the judges room to mark up or down later.

Sometimes they mess up with the last ones on, such as Movie week when Louise & Kevin closed with the Flashdance Cha Cha after The Mask Samba.

No. They ask Aliona what she thinks the order should be and then reverse it just to see if it crashes her Hola.

Kevin goes near the end. Everyone else chosen at random

Yeah it's generally this.

There may be factors of holding certain celebs to the near end if they want to try and keep the audience watching (in order to keep the attention away from other rival shows). But generally start off with dances of some show value (be it good, comedy, weirdly random etc).

Also it can sometimes depend on staging too, if certain props are used.

Kevin has two decisions to make every week the 1st being if he ever wants to move away from the very centre of the opening line up when the Couple come down the Stairs and for 2 years he has decided not to move. The other decision is where he appears in the Dancing order.
