Why are some people still so hung up on Jay?

Poor Ore and Joanne are getting it in the neck for daring to peform a top notch and jive and getting 10's for it. Anyone who mentions how good Ore's jive was is getting constantly reminded that Jays was also good, in fact it was obviously much better. Well that's a matter of opinion, but no one is taking anything away from Jay. Yes his jive was excellent, but why are we still going on about him a year later? He won.

Jay doesn't own the copyright to the jive ffs!

tbf- Len started this particular spate of comparisons. And FMs who aren't at all hung up on Jay are having fun with poll threads.
Most uber-fans are minding their own business in the Appreciation threads.
And plenty of posters have "wuzrobbed"s they're hung up on. Jay's no different really.

Probably len and his comments that Jay could move over and Ore's was better.Wrong move, they Jay fans are brutal.

Just when you think the Jay jive argument has nearly died down, up pops a new thread to drag it out a bit more.

Oh joy.

Jay wasn't robbed of anything though, he won. He'd won it the moment he came on and did that jive. Arguably Kellie danced fsr better in the final, but he still won. So there is nothing to do the whole 'hewozrobbed' over!

I liked Jay and wanted him to win by the way. But this has got to stop now.

I think it had started to die down before this thread was started - the other threads on it are falling down the page. It was inevitably going to be a talking point after Len brought it up.

To be fair, I see far more people complaining about Jay fans at the moment than I see Jay fans doing whatever it is they're being accused of. As I said on another thread, I feel like I can't give my honest opinion in a comparison poll if it favours Jay because a few posters seem to get really irritated by it, and claim it's just blind fanaticism.

Hey remember that time Jay said he wanted to mutilate a toddler?

Good times.

Yeah. Good luck with that.

The problem is Len made a comparison which was always going to stir up a hornet's nest as it passed negative asperions onto a previous performance. Though, to be fair, the marks alone would have done that even if Len hadn't mentioned it!

Well, maybe they (as in the judges bar Craig) learned from last year and tried to award 10s when they think it's warranted (no matter what week) - in case they might not get another chance to do it in the final.

While I don't agree with their 10s for Ore, it's their prerogative to award them as they see fit.

Plus, it feels like tptb think they have to make this series even more memorable/spectacular/dramatic than the last one.

Besides noticeable exceptions it has been rather lacklustre so far. Add to that all the turmoil to distract from - the result being hyped dances/routines/celebs/pros, controversal comments/marks...

I've no doubt at all that he meant nothing actually malicious by that comment, but I'm still extremely baffled that the expression of wanting to 'cut off his hair and hands and feet - and squeeze him - and put him in a bag and kick it' is supposedly an expression frequently used in Nottinghamshire!
But, then again, I've never lived in Nottingham so what do I know!

I remember when he said it on ITT and being a a bit puzzled but I don't understand why anybody would think he really meant what he was saying

Technically he was brilliant and through time he got over the nerves we saw in week one and managed to perform confidently......his journey. He brought a lot of emotion to his dancing which won people over too.

Peter Andre would have been hung, drawn and quartered if he had made a comment approaching anything like that - even in jest.

I have highlighted the two examples above to illustrate that Jay could do absolutely no wrong in so many fans eyes. That's why I do see much of (not all) but much of his support as absolute blind fanaticism. I just do not understand the power he holds over so many...

I beg to differ - well, kind of

Not sure Peter actually is a good example for the point you're trying to make.

Jay's comment is widely considered to have been a genuine foot-in-mouth moment - no malicious intent, no intention to stirr up things, to make a joke or cause a controversy. He simply forgot to think about what he was saying because he got lost in the moment.

Nobody doubts that what he said was inappropriate and that it would have been better if he hadn't said it. But a lot of people either chose to "forgive" him because they saw it as an honest mistake, decided that it didn't have anything to do with his dancing or that it really didn't matter.

A lot of people perceived Peter as very calculated and conscious about what he did and said - almost to a point that it was perceived as fake/insincere - always intent on making a good impression. Whether this is just a perception or actually true is anybody's own decision.

Personally, I doubt such a foot-in-mouth moment would have happened to him - too media savvy and calculated (for lack of a better, less negatively connoted word). So no hanging, drawing and quartering necessary.

If Peter had said that, people would probably have perceived it as intentional (reason see above) - to create a controversy, (bad) pr or to make a bad joke.

So yes, he most likely would have had to take a lot of flack for such a comment - but not because of the content itself, but because it would have been considered intentional to further an agenda by quite a few people and not an honest mistake.

Before you can go on and accuse me of blind fanatism: Yes, I wanted Jay to win. Yes, I liked his dancing. Yes, he did go wrong quite a few times and made mistakes. He made that stupid comment. But that didn't change the fact that I watched last series because of him. It might be my limited understanding of the English language as a non-native speaker, but accepting somebody's flaws and faults as human doesn't equal "could do absolutely no wrong".

And not just over his fans, it seems, but his detractors too.... We could all unite and try to break his weird but compelling power by not setting up any more threads and polls about him and concentrating on this year?

And about as likely to happen as Anastasia waltzing off with the SCD glitter ball.

He just used one of those expressions (which did not use the word 'mutilate'), which are localised to his particular part of the country. They often sound silly, mystifying or, in some cases, downright alarming, to those who come from outside the area. This has been confirmed by a number of people from the vicinity. My Grandmother would say to us "I love you so much, I could eat you all up". It is, indeed, fortunate that she didn't appear on national TV, and broadcast this to the country.... We might have had a string of do-gooders, queuing-up, out side our door, to rescue us.

It says a great deal for the man's charisma, that people are still talking about him, whether they want to, or not, more than a year later.

For me it hasn't been at all lacklustre: plenty of entertaining strong characters (Tameka, Anastacia, Leslie, Ore, Rinder), no consensus on who will make the final, more good male celebs than ever before, and in just the first 4 weeks at least two stand-out moments from Rinder & Ore and at least two more talking points from Ed & Danny, perky cheerfulness and acrobatics from Claudia&AJ, swoonsome looks from Greg and Danny (+ Ore for me), (and Laura, Daisy and Louise too I guess!) no OTT comedy dances involving canons or flying bikes (yet), and Tess & Claud getting better and better together.

I know the atmosphere here on DS hasn't always been great, but the show itself is way better than that. I think it's a good year.
