It's so odd as there is no reason for it and AFAIK it has never been addressed on screen.

Think it was originally when he was having one of his nasty periods after Richard Hillman tried to kill them all - he blames her for that. He does it when he's feeling particular animosity towards her, which is quite often. He's being deliberately disrespectful. He does still sometimes call her mum.

When he found out from an old diary of hers that she had thought about having him aborted.

It was Ivy's diary but yes it was since then.

His intention was to say it to be disrespectful as he he didn't feel she deserved to be called mum.

Viewers who know the history of the platt family know why he does it, like the posts mentioned above.

Ah yes, I remember now. But it did get worse after Richard Hillman and he even sent her cards from Richard to try and mess with her mind.

Why is it odd? I know quite a few champagne socialists who call their parents by their Christian names.

why does it matter if parents are called by their first name? It doesn't stop you being their parent, and it doesn't stop the children respecting you.
it takes far more than a name to make someone an effective mother or father.

Yes it can be, but not in Davids case

No, not in David's case. Although, I think "Gail" has just stuck now and he means nothing disrespectful by it.
I like the way they have him calling her Mum when he is particularly distressed, as if he is reverting back to childhood.

There is a reason for it though. I thought it started not long after he discovered that his mother didn't really want him and was on her way to have an abortion until Martin stopped her. Perfectly reasonable I think for him to call her Gail. I think she's done enough for him in the meantime though - for him to start calling her mum again. I think they'll build up to something in the near future and he will call her mum again.

I agree after everything she has done for him lately I hope it changes.

They way he said Gail when he was locked in the cellar was full of spite and contempt. Generally when he says it he says it in a pointed contemptuous way.

but he needs to grow up and be a dad now and grow as a character, he needs to show Gail respect or those kids are gonna be so far off the rails they make him look like an angel

I think it's really weird, the thought of me doing it I would feel horrible and embarrassed.

Just try it go and shout your loving Mum by her name

Ever since he decided to specialise in being a resentful divvy who talks to others in a horrible manner. Now he's a widower, maybe he should move to Walford and marry the equally rude and abrasive Stacey Slater.

Is it wrong for me to think it's rather petty of him to hold it against Gail for almost having an abortion? She thought about it, but allowed herself to be persuaded otherwise - Surely, that's enough for him? How many parents deliberate over these things - Can they really afford another baby? There are plenty of people out there who either know or suspect they might have been an 'accident' but they live with it. Similarly, there is always that possibility that your mother might have thought about abortion whether you know about it or not. You would think David would be aware of such complexities considering his sister got pregnant at 14. Furthermore, his late wife once effectively sold her son to Becky and Steve for ready cash, but he never judged her for it.

Life isn't perfect, so there's no reason why birth should be.

I'd never even thought about it until the other night when he called her mum and she said "oh it's mum now is it, not Gail" or words to that effect and then I realised that I'd just accepted that he called her Gail all this time without wondering why.

As others have said, it started after she discovered she originally intended to abort him (which was after Richard Hillman) and he did it precisely because it is disrespectful - he wanted to hurt her. Then it just sort of stuck so now it is the norm and he doesn't mean anything by it and Gail doesn't take any offence or upset from it.

When he is upset (like when Kylie died) he does revert to Mum and it is actually quite touching as it shows he does love and need her deep down.

It's a case of him initially using it to be mean, and simply sticking to the point of being almost an affectionate family joke. Just like how he constantly tells her it's his house.

The intended abortion was before Richard Hillman. David is Martin Platt's son. Gail intended to abort him because she didn't want to be tied down with three children and she thought Martin was too young. She divorced Martin and much later Richard Hillman tries to drown Gail, Sarah and David by driving them into the canal. Martin is one of those who try to stop him.

David is also aware that Nick is Gail's favourite, which doesn't help with his attitude towards her.

Yes, I know about his parentage and order of Gail's husbands. What I meant was David found out about the intended abortion after Richard Hillman death and that is when his animosity really started.
