I think it's safe to say Little Mix will never be as big as The Spice Girls or TLC. Ever.

The Spice Girls opened the doors for most of the girl bands that have come out since the end of the 1990s. I can still see their influence on pop stars today. They're iconic. Whether you like them or not they were a pop phenomenon, they are THE defining pop band of the 1990s. They've only released three studio albums in 20 years (the last one was in 2000), but their worldwide success was far, far bigger than that of Girls Aloud, Sugababes, All Saints and Little Mix. GA are non-entities outside of the UK. AS and Sugababes only had a few hits in other countries.

Little Mix hasn't released anything as successful as Wannabe. In fact, they haven't released a song that's anywhere near as good as Viva Forever, Stop, Who Do You Think You Are, Too Much, Say You'll Be There, Goodbye or 2 Become 1. The Spice Girls have at least half a dozen solid pop songs in their back catalogue that radio stations still play. Little Mix's music isn't nearly as memorable or consistent. I certainly wouldn't call them "unstoppable" - their singles routinely miss the top 10, and their album sales in the UK and the US are not that impressive, they're not even on One Direction's level.

They make The Spice Girls look like The Beatles. Manufactured dross.

I don't particularly like them. I think their music is quite average in all honesty. They will have their time and then try to go solo.

both little mix and the spice girl are utter shite and the spice girls back catalogue is utter dross and for the spcie girls being trailblazers there were hundreds of girl pop groups before them

I don't think they're very good. Couple of catchy pop songs, but I don't think they're that great. I think Fifth Harmony are better, but that's just personal opinion. Little Mix are very popular in the UK at the moment, but I think they need to be careful. One Direction were worked like dogs by Simon/Syco...it was one album straight after the other, constant touring, no breaks. I'd say that's what ultimately led to them splitting up (or going on a break as they're calling it). Syco seem to be going down a similar route with Little Mix...new album pretty much straight after the last, another tour already etc. Eventually it always leads to burn out when they treat bands/groups like this.

There is very little discussion of their music in the threads about them, it's all just talk about and lists of chart positions - which is just seems odd to me. I guess the product produced under their name itself isn't worth of any real discussion?

The only song i'm really aware of by them is Black Magic - a catchy little ditty I admit, but somewhat dubious lyrically.

This. I actually like some of their music, but a lot of discussion about them online is either (a) how they are much better than Fifth Harmony, (b) how they are such good friends or (c) dubious chart positions like a #1 on a chart in Singapore etc where no local acts appear.

There were girl pop groups before The Spice Girls but very few of the 'hundreds' you mention actually did have the impact on pop culture and music that the Spice Girls had. They are the biggest selling girl group of all time with over 80m sales, no other girl group can claim that.

They arrived towards the highpoint of BritPop, they were part of the Cool Britannia culture, they brought 'girl power' into popular parlance, they were iconic (the Union Jack dress)...they were influential on the girl groups that came after them in a way that earlier groups were not.

You don't have to like them to recognise that.

”

All Saints had top 10 singles across Europe with the majority of their singles so that is quite harsh, also the Sugababes had lots of top 10 singles for a couple of years across Europe.
And AS had relevant high selling hits that were high flyers for the year released (Never ever & Pure shores) and Sugababes (Hole in the head & Push the button)
Little Mix yet have to get an all over Europe big hit, let alone US that can be seen as a classic hitsingle for their back catalogue

Yup. And straight after my post, posts about chart positions, image, sales...Not a single mention of the music though....It's sad really that the actually music is taking second fiddle to a bunch of meaningless stats.

Oh wow my thread has really taken off In a way I wasn't expecting. The thread isn't really about each and everyones different taste etc etc it is about facts. LM are now at the moment the biggest girl group around fact. The profile is at a all time high and rising. The girls are getting bigger with each album which is rare very rare these days and nowe it is down to LM to how big they want to be. They will obviously never reach the heights of The Spice Girls but then who will these days?

The girls know exactly what they are and don't hide away from that fact. They are fun and very good singers. Right now they can go as far as they want because in the wider world of pop the girls are hot and in huge demand.

Only a fact if you ignore the Asian continent...2NE1 for example have 67 million sales with just two albums so far...

But so far they have made very little impact outside the Korean/Japanese market.

doesn't mean they are good, just look at the Beatles, biggest record sales, tons of folk dislike them, you go on about facts, well that's all they are, facts - emotionless.

By the way, for lovers of tat, apparently Bros are reforming.

Not just 2NE1 but AKB48, Girls Generation, Morning Musume, S.H.E., T-ara and Wonder Girls are all outselling Little Mix

Not true. There are a lot of Japanese and Korean girl groups who are enjoying success all across Asia. 2NE1 and Girls Generation have also had albums chart in American despite the fact they were singing in Korean.
