I really liked them myself. They didn't opt for overly try-hard cool, they made it quite colourful rather than edgy, and the song isn't too bad either... plus the trippy kaleidoscope feel of it really hits the same kind of note as Doctor Who. It kind of made me realise how lifeless the one on Doctor Who feels...and I say that as someone who never had a problem with DW's current intro, visually at least.
Spoiler
Aside from that the threats at Coal Hill so far seem interesting enough. As much as the second episode had a strong monster-of-the-week vibe that's not necessarily a problem so long as the threats remain diverse and distinctive. So far they seem to be, much more so than Torchwood's threats were at this early stage. And there's no sign of a Cyberwoman yet, so that's another perk ![]() |

I enjoyed it well enough, but unfortunately with less-than-perfect hearing was having to guess at what was going on most of the time. Is a lack of subtitles usual for BBC3?

I'm a student, so I guess part of the show's target audience, and I have to say having watched the first two episodes, I really enjoyed both, and found them very refreshing, following what I thought was a quite stodgy series 9 last year building up to Clara's exit.

Well I've watched episode 2 now and the worries I expressed about ep 1 continued here sadly. I honestly don't see how its going to be different for each episode. It felt very similar to episode one, albeit this time with a shower scene of the coach.
The whole premise of the show I think is going to hold it back. At least with the Sarah Jane Adventures, it went to other places. Class just feels so limited in scope that even though its sci-fi, I'm struggling to take it seriously. Every threat is just going to chasing the kids through the corridors. If you've seen it once, how many more times are we going to see it? As someone whose only 24 as well, I'm struggling to connect with any of the characters. They don't feel at all realistic to me, but maybe I was such an un-typical teenager that I never knew what it was like to be one of these regular teens. If I'm not on their side, it hardly says a lot now does it? So, if as some people say episode 3 is where it properly picks up, I'll give it another go, but the next time looked pretty much the same again. If its the same director for the all the episodes, he should have varied it a lot more. It's all too samey. Class unfortunately just makes me wish that the spin-off was either River related or something to do with Vastra, Jenny and Strax. There could have been so much more variety with them. |

Ahhhh okay best be safe.
I really enjoyed the 12th Doctor in this too. Maybe he works better on his own/without Clara? Did anyone else notice they used the season 1 theme for the Doctor when the TARDIS first appeared? |

By the way, where are the police in this show, CSI people.... or even you know that little old alien fighting thing called UNIT.... murders left right and centre, aliens running amok.... why does The Doctor leave this danger spot to be looked after by some young people (with no proven track record or you know military experience) and an alien psychopath doing it against her will... isn't that a ticking bomb, and they are not going to be in education forever, just a few years....
So um why not get UNIT in, you know the organisation designed to deal with this very problem, who the Doctor has history with, the organisation with great power, the organisation that will do what ever the Doctor asks them to do..... the place should be shut down, and have UNIT security monitoring the area.. an easy cover being that there's some chemical or nuclear or radiation fallout in the area so it needs to be cornered off, UNIT can do that as they have the power of the UK government and the United Nations behind them, it would be easy.. ...yet the Doctor decides to go for the reckless, dangerous, life threatening decision to let some regular people keep an eye on it and deal with whatever it throws out..... hmm.... riiiight..... Not a good plan.... Point 2 - Also another problem I had with the two episode is a same problem that's plagued DW, people just forget.... what... Um no, it would be all over the internet, in newspapers, photos the human race finding out about aliens would not forget it, even if their minds were put under some forget spell (see how silly it is) it would still be recorded, it would be in ink or stone as it were so how would people not know.... ...its the lack on consequences that really irks me, something Moffats DW is the biggest offender of, such as the moon egg episode and the magic trees of no consequence episode, its such a childish thing to say oh people forget, and there's good childish (which DW can be good at) and there's bad childish and that's what the whole they forget thing is, because it under cuts all drama as it creates a world without consequences, and without it there is no dramatic weight, and this show is trying to be adult, how can you do a so called more grown up show in the whoverse if they do the childish everyone forgets thing... its insulting to the intelligence in doctor who, to the oldest of fans and to the youngest fans, its even worse though to do it in blood soaked show dancing its adultness.... If writers don't want consequences to effect the wider world then don't write stories that would effect that wider world, write contained stories that effect the character and the limited people around them, don't give reason for the wider world to know anything.... |

I was a bit puzzled at the end too. At least two school children/young people were killed during the episode and yet . . police??

Dull! Could just be any American teen sci fi programme but with British accents. I hope the new series doesn't have writing like this.

I have to agree. Unrealistic and flat dialogue spoken by beautiful people. Terrible, stilted and vacuous TV for the Nickelodeon generation. Absolutely souless and charmless on every level. Makes 'Saved By The Bell' look like 'I, Claudius'

We let her watch ep1 in the end! We all really enjoyed it. The "gory bit" wasn't too bad really. Lovely cast of characters. Thanks for your feedback. It helped us make the right decision!

Well, I've had a watch of both episodes now, and I'll stick with it as for me there's been more pros than cons. Thought the first episode did a good job of setting up the premise and it was nice to see Peter C back on screen at last. Thought it was an engaging enough bit of escapism, the cast are appealing and, I know some disagree, as I said on the other thread, I like the credits as they remind me of the 70's Tomorrow People, which was rather nostalgic. (I grinned when the hand came zooming up.)
The second episode was diverting enough and the pace settled down a bit to allow for some character development. I don't think it's going to set the world on fire and I'm hardly in the core demographic, but it was enjoyable enough for me to see how things go. There will be (indeed have been already, another one coming up...) comparisons with other shows, but anything needs a little time to grow into itself; and Katherine Kelly is a huge plus for me as I've liked her other work and think she's a very fine actor. My main problem with early Torchwood episodes was partly the 'try too hard to be dead adult' stuff and (particularly) the fact that I didn't actually like or *really care less about* any of the characters. The kids (or YA's? Hell, they're kids to me, even though I believe the chap who plays Charlie got married yesterday! ) here were likeable and interesting enough for me to get engaged in the story. Prior to the series I really didn't expect it to be my cup of tea all, but I'm happy to see how things pan out and where they go with it from here. |

A few months ago she asked if we could watch it together from the beginning so we're towards the end of season 2 at the moment. She's really enjoying it, which is lovely. Me too, of course!

Well I watched the second episode today and as I expected it seemed very similar to the first(Minus The Doctor, off course!)
Watching it, it still seems this curious mix of Buffy and Torchwood, though I think with the gore etc it was more like early Torchwood series. What concerns me about it is that it will stale very quickly if every story is set in the school and every week there's a different monster cropping up. I will reserve judgement until a few episodes in but at the moment it's very samey so hopefully variety will come in the following episodes.

Just a though that came into my mind, the reason why I loved SJA more so than Torchwood and even the Main series at times was the fact that, it didn't try so hard to be adult and down with the kids, and the fact they weren't obssessed with the aesthetics of the show, even if they weren't targeting a YA demographic at points it felt really mature and dealt with grown up concepts it just came naturally, it gave kids some credit. It also made space seem really big those magical moments when Sarah Jane and the gang will stare out the attic window into space and when she'd talk about all shes seen with The Doctor and how dangerous it was and those beautiful night time shots with a goregous soundtrack.
I also loved how sometimes the kids were left to fend for themselves like when The Trickster took Sarah Jane out of time and existence and Maria wasn't affected by the new established timeline because of the puzzlebox, yet she pulled through and got to the bottom of it. The writers really made you care for them and Sarah Jane and their families, defending the world from an Attic in Ealing. Class is good I see what the characters are going through but I'm not really feeling them if you know what I mean., Maybe I just need more episodes who knows. |

its a shame they just didn't invest in TW again (I know that old chestnut) it wasn't really offering anything different apart from a new location/characters |

I watched on iPlayer via Roku box and the subtitles were working fine

Apparently there was a technical error originally on the first episode so the subtitles weren't there early on, they are on there now though.
