I recorded the show and fast forwarded through most of it. Skipped the vts - skipped the judge's comments and tbh skipped the majority of the routines this week but did watch to see what happened with Laura
This is my first post so be gentle.......
Personally I much preferred SCD in the earlier series when they all did the same two dances and you could really compare. Plus that meant dances like the Paso didn't get brought out until about week 5 and you used to get some really good one's. I love to see a good paso and by people like Ed doing them, they lose their intensity.
I also think the judges are being over kind. Craig at least is still honest, but as he says do the others not realise they have paddles from 1-10 not just from 7-10.
I spot things that would have been pointed out in previous series, flat feet, pigeon toes, stoppy/starty dances but no one mentions it.
And if Len says once more "you came out and you went for it" I might scream

I am able to get RTE (Irish TV Channel) and they for a few years showed the US version Dancing With The Stars. I did watch and it was very interesting to see the difference in judging standards, Len and Bruno plus a woman who I do not know. Len was more relaxed and less about the actual dance techniques, and more the fun factor of the performers and dances. As we see now. Loads of lifts and nothing said about them, the Lindy Hop and the Charleston. It was a few years later we had the Charleston appear on Strictly. I am still waiting for the Lindy Hop to pop up.
The show is now very similar to the US version. My brother in Canada often says to me oh they vote for some crap dancer because he/she comes across as nice. They are just awful but people like them, ex war hero, rapper etc. Its how you come across to the viewers not how good you dance now.

I agree. I ended up watching some old favourite dances from previous series the other day, and actually it just made me really miss the 'old days' of strictly. I've pretty much watched the show avidly since around Series 3, and having looked at old clips I'd say that around 2005-2010 were the shows glory days for me. Really high quality pros and engagement in the partnerships, high quality dances without gimmicks, and more honest marking. Honestly, Strictly at its best really made me quite ridiculously happy.
I've found myself a bit bored this series. Gimmicks and manipulation. A lot of the partnerships don't have the chemistry, and people have been matched up on the basis of publicity for the show rather than suitability or even appropriate heights in some cases. I also no longer really have favourites amongst the pros and don't enjoy the pro dances any more... Which used to be one of the parts of the show I looked forward to the most.
I would love to see a drawing back of some of the gimmicky and proppy, more manipulative elements. A bit more honesty. Go back to what the show should be about: teaching people to dance beautiful, high quality dances, and letting the viewer learn about the dances and be involved in the couples' journeys.

Very interesting observations, I also blame the show's format - much more is done for the sshow and less for the competition aspect.

I agree with all of this. There was too much hype leading up to the first show, drip feeding us with celeb reveals, teasing us with snippets of what was to come but then the show is a let down because it doesn't live up to expectations. I like seeing new pros but the characters who make it entertaining don't seem to want to hang around after one or two series i.e. Gleb & Tristan. This is the first time I've not had a favourite, someone I look forward to watching each week and already I'm not really bothered who wins the glitterball and it's only week 5. Overall this series feels bland and lacklustre for me.

As we only recognised 5 of the starting 15, there was less interest in my house than usual. That said, we thought the standing of dancing was higher than usual in the first few episodes. Apart Ed Balls, no predictable terrible dancer for the judges to rip apart and complain that the audience wasn't sending them home.
There has been quite a lot of disruption to the normal process this year. No dance-off in week one due to injury and the injured party being the one to continue into week two. A celebrety quitting, another injury this week and Illness amoung the pro dancers.
It is all adding up and spoilling the enjoyment.

Think you have summed it up for me - although I do like Greg and Daisy and Claudia - good music only seems to be given to Ore and Joanne - and I am beginning to dislike Tess for some reason. The VTs are horrendous - wish I could delete them. Think the show needs at least one new host and the 'guests' with Claudia should be done away with!

Amen to this. When Balls dance is announced it's time for me to put the kettle on, same goes for Claudia and her young pro. Anton, Brendan and Natalie are the ones who keep me watching. Kevin makes me grind my teeth and I can't bear Alijas - to me they're blancmange compared to Artem and Gleb's fiery chili

Definitely agree with all the above. Series 2 to 5/6 until Austin went was the absolute high point for me. I never missed Claudia on ITT and got quite ridiculously invested, not least because we got to know the contestants as people, and not just performing stupid skits.
Aside from the getting away from the basics of ballroom dancing, I just think it's way too over produced. It is still the only thing I ever watch on telly, and occasionally there is a lovely moment that recaptures some magic, but the only time I did get invested over the last few years was for Kara and Artem, the rest of the time it's all been very meh in comparison.
And shoot me but Bruce at his best contributed to some all time great moments, not least his cheeky put down to Ricky after his arrest and Mark and Karen's salsa.
Was thinking the same thing last night I think what has finally got under my skin is those silly really stupid Video EG. couple in Paris to me they get more crass each year aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and they are not needed aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrr

Same for me. I get through SCD in a about 20 minutes now. I skip the silly training videos, skip Tess's awful intros and, once I'm a couple of shows in, I start skipping the couples I don't like!
I think the main problem is that they have lost a lot of the personalities within the dancers. There are very few I care about now. I don't even bother voting unless a couple really interest me. I didn't like James Jordan for example, but I liked what he added to the show in terms of him arguing back and sticking up for his partner. Brendan used to do that, but he seems to have be told to stay in line (fear of the sack?). I miss people like Vincent, Artem and Robin Windsor - the new dancers just seem so bland.
The celebs can make a difference to - its nice to have people who are celebrities for their achievements, not their parentage. Daisy Lowe is probably lovely but she is only mildly well-known for who her parents are and for hanging round with the Geldofs. Claudia isn't really a celeb either, whereas I would say Greg is, as he has been around for a while and done other media, plus has loads of achievements, rather than cashing in on just one good competition (sorry if that sounds harsh). So, its like watching someone off the street for me with those two. I also think it would be better without all the drama/dance school trained celebs, as its pretty boring watching people who can dance from day one. I think my all time favourite celeb in terms of what they achieved on SCD was Mark Ramprakash.
I agree with a previous poster who said it was better when they had just a couple of dances each week, so you could really compare the dancers to see who was doing them best. And who picks the music? Some of the songs chosen are almost impossible to dance to.
Get rid of the silly set-up intros and show some proper training footage. Maybe give a bit of info about each dance, so us amateur viewers have an idea of what we should be looking for, and so we can decide for ourselves, with a bit of knowledge, who did good.
Finally, could we lose Tess. I'm sure she's lovely but she's almost as cringey as Bruce. I love Claudia though.

Absolutely! Love them or loathe them, I think the show absolutely needs the non-purist choreographers to provide some spice and food for discussion. We need some grit in the show, it's all too nice.
Same goes for off the dance floor - I miss being annoyed at James and Ola (never thought I would say that), miss rolling my eyes at Vincent, miss Artem being grumpy and Iveta being hilarious. It's partly due to the show being over produced now, of course, but I think the pro line-up is definitely missing some "real" characters. Same goes for the celeb line-up this year, but at least that is temporary. We'll be stuck with most of the pros.
Last night's show was very lacklustre even the judges except Bruno seem bored I didn't even vote which I normally do

Plus that meant dances like the Paso didn't get brought out until about week 5 and you used to get some really good one's. A rather odd comment to make, seeing as the new Bake Off on Channel 4 will be anything but familiar. With a new judge, new presenters, commercial breaks and perhaps a new style you would have thought it would be the very thing you needed to stop being bored of it?
I've just got to ask the obvious question...............why on earth watch a programme that has so many flaws?

I watched the X-Factor avidly until I got totally fed up with it THEN I stopped watching it.
If you don't enjoy it (and I really do) stop watching it and it won't annoy you any more.

Personaly I'm enjoying this series, especially seeing Oti get a decent run we didn't see enough of her last year, and I enoyed Lesley and Anton couldn't stand him with that posh bird last year.
