Incredible TV. Just incredible.

full of nightmarish images, the baby iguanas first view of the world as they have to dash across the pebbles and evade the racer snakes, nearly as frightening as the baby turtles being picked off by gulls, and the red crabs being blinded, poisoned and dismantled by ants.

I thought snakes only acted like that in scifi or cartoons - terrifying.

Someone should build those penguins a set of stairs.

I wonder when the rumoured 4k content will start on Iplayer?

Would love to watch this show in 4k.

The BBC doesn't have a dedicated 4K iPlayer channel yet.

Wow, just beautiful. Makes me realise how little knowledge I have of our Earth. Humans and animals alike are living in their own little worlds just trying to survive.

The snake part was intense. The last lizard who survived, reminded me of an action movie scene 😁

But people like watching these things, it seems. As well as penguins getting dashed against rocks. Amazing.

Does anyone else think it would be better if instead of having 50 minutes about the animals then 10 minutes at the end talking about how it was filmed that the whole hour should be taken up with talking about the animals and then an extra programme of say 30 minutes talking about the filming, this could be on the BBC3 online channel.

That was without doubt one of the best bits of TV i have seen in years. Utterly compelling, wonderfully shot, yes the story of the penguin was a bit shmaltzy but it was incredible..Both me and my wife absolutely loved it and we were just sat there with jaws open at the hard word and dedication that go into making a programme like this. I was gutted when it ended. Of course watching it in 60 inch HD with surround sound helps..made it a real event

Penguins are my new heroes

One sad fact to remember though is that more people were probably watching crap factor on the other side.

I felt so sorry for the penguins, incredible species. Found some bits hard to watch, such as the baby lizards and snakes.

Happily, they were not. 9.2 million watched Planet Earth II against 6.5 million for XF.

I want a racing snake.

Me too - it's very clever and all that, but the mutual back slapping is always OTT to me. It would make a great spin off show, but I'm not keen on it always being slotted on to the end.

It's a 50 minute programme for showing with commercial breaks.

The BBC show the bonus stuff to fill an hour slot.

Like most programmes these days, the BBC produces them with ad breaks in mind for export and satellite sales. So the main programme is edited to fill a 60 minute slot with ads, without the ads there's only about 50 minutes of actual programme, so the diary / how it's made bits are added to fill the hour slot.

It hadn't occurred to me about the adbreak thing - it all makes more sense now! I'll let them off.

I suspect a lot of people have googled "marine iguana", "crazy ants" and "racing snakes" this morning.

I must admit when it first showed the crabs on Christmas Island, I actually thought "No, please don't do this because I've seen this crab parade before" and then we get crazy ants with acid squirting in the eyes and mouths.

I cannot wait for the snow leopards close up photography.

Oh my goodness, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Fancy having to run for your life, your eyes barely opened within seconds of being born! They were so menacing, slithering out together in unison! I honestly believed that the baby marine iguana was safe once it leapt up high onto a rock, but no, the snakes were just as easily able to stretch their entire bodies suddenly upward, poker straight and pounce that way. Poor babies!

Why do they have to make a deal with Sky? last time i checked BT also have a platform more than capable of delivering 4K content both in real time and on demand, Virgin are also rolling out their 4K box now as well..
So why can't they make it available for all TV companies with suitable delivery platforms?
