I did chuckle when the dad stumbled over the rock

The poor bloodied penguin though

Agree with everyone else about it being stunning television. Glad it rated brilliantly

Love this review:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2016/1...fying--review/

The bit about the snakes being what everyone would be talking about ... and giving you nightmares! lol

I saw a tweet from someone saying 'I'm making a horror film called the snakes from Planet Earth 2'

And the one with the broken leg that they didn't show in the programme but in the diary bit.

Reminds of - I think it was trials of life - the episode about new life and there was some sort of bird, that for safety, had her chicks on a very very very high rock, with a sheer drop to the bottom of about 400 feet or something ... and the new born chicks had to get to the bottom when they were only a few days old. They couldn't fly so they literally just jumped and bounced off the rocks down to the bottom. You winced just watching it!
On the original programme I think 4 out of the 6 survived ... but in the bit at the end of the programme when they showed the camera crew filming this, what we didn't see in the programme was the first family they filmed. Because all the chicks that survived were killed by foxes that appeared from nowhere!
Just goes to show what we don't get to see!

So why can't they make it available for all TV companies with suitable delivery platforms?”

They should. But the iPlayer on BT YouView is the streaming version at 720p, it will need to be upgraded first to get 2160p content.

Sky's works differently in that the iPlayer comes in 1080i broadcast quality and is not streamed, but is stored on Sky's servers and delivered by progressive download to everyone regardless of BB speed.

No upgrade needed to add 2160p content as it's already available on the same system.

Virgin not available yet.

Incidentally, Attenborough's Sky 3D docs were filmed with 4K cameras and are available to download in 2D UHD as well as 3D HD.

I remember that Flukie. What we do sometíimes see is hard enough to watch and moré and more they're showing us nature red in tooth and claw. It's a fine line to draw because I'd like children to get involved in loving our planet and conservation but some of it is truly horrific and painful viewing.

I watch every nature programme going but I've never seen anything as evil as the racer snakes.

Now I'm wondering what other food source they have on the Galapogos. Google will tell me I hope.

Súperb and absorbing filming. BBC Bristol Nature division continues to educate me.

Planet Earth II most watched natural history show for 15 years

With 9.2m viewers, David Attenborough’s BBC1 documentary is already one of the most popular TV shows of the year

The opening episode of Planet Earth II was the most watched natural history programme in the UK for more than 15 years, drawing in 9.2 million viewers to BBC1 on Sunday evening.

Helped by airing immediately after Strictly Come Dancing’s results show, which had a series-high audience of 10.1 million, the David Attenborough-narrated documentary is already one of the most popular shows of the year so far in a field usually dominated by drama, sport and entertainment.

A really interesting read saying the film makers were totally shocked at what they saw.

They are saying a lot of the footage was to horrific to show snakes don't hunt in packs and they would start attacking and eating each other.

Planet Earth 2: About that horror-show racer snake chase

We spoke to the producer of the first episode of Planet Earth 2 about how the bits that were too horrific to show and the iguanas that got away.

Just watched it again on iplayer. How did the iguana know the snakes had bad eye sight. Amazing. It stayed still until the snake bumped into it. It also avoided 5-6 other close calls. A born survivor.

I have not seen it yet but sadly I don't have a HD telly so will not get the true quality that you are all seeing - but I am sure it will still be magnificent to watch.

I have already seen the Komodo Dragon battle for supremacy and that was simple awes-inspiring.

I am also really pleased that a groundbreaking, top quality programme has attracted so many millions of viewers.

I have not and will never watch any 'reality/celebrity shite so I am absolutely delighted that the nation still has an appetite for wonderful shows such as this.

Great programme. All those snakes appearing as if out of nowhere, so many of them too.

OMG this was so brutal, I watched a lot of it with a cushion covering my face with me peering out & asking OH if it was 'safe' to watch; I love all animals & can't bear to see them in any kind of distress.

What possess the iguana to lay their eggs in a snake infested environment in the first place, unless the snakes found them. I suppose enough survive so the instinct to find somewhere else and protect the specie doesn't kick in.

I bet the snakes don't pick on the adults when they lay their eggs.

I caught up with this last night after seeing the running of the Iguana It was like a horror film.

I do wonder why they lay their eggs there? But that is nature I suppose.

Amazing programme but so sad.

I was gutted when it ended. Of course watching it in 60 inch HD with surround sound helps..made it a real event

Penguins are my new heroes

One sad fact to remember though is that more people were probably watching crap factor on the other side.”

Which would explain why contestants are as thick as shite on quiz shows.

I can't offer data, but I do have an anecdotal example. I have some friends for whom I also act as a technical consultant on anything to do with TVs and computers etc. I chose their TV, DVR and soundbar and set it all up for them. And every time I'm there and we watch TV, I have to endure them declining the EPG's invitation to watch a programme in HD, so that they can watch it in SD instead.

Their reasoning seems to be a cross between not being able to tell the difference, and being unwilling to move away from the old familiar channel numbers. It's scary down there in the hundreds!

[I'd like to comment on PE2, but I haven't watched my recording yet. I was at my friends' house, watching something else in SD...]

Planet Earth 2: 9.2m
X Factor: 6.9m

So they weren't. People are more intelligent than you give them credit for.

Indeed, and if anything the X Factor ratings were probably inflated because people would have preferred to watch that live (and Planet Earth on a delay later) so they didnt have to avoid the result on social media for the rest of the evening.

Planet Earth will probably be nearer 11m when the 7-day figures are released.

Only caught up with this last night, and as most have said it was stunning tv, as a first episode in a series it set a very high benchmark.

Well done BBC, public broadcasting at it's best
