Halloween is just around the corner.

Creepy, chilling tunes from Pink Floyd, Eminem, Nick Cave, more...

25 Songs That Are Truly Terrifying

I only know six of the songs on this list...

Will listen to a few of the tunes I don't know of in a little while.

Of the six I do know, my favourite creepy song is DOA by Bloodrock.

Do you have a favourite song to listen to on Halloween, when the shimmering and sinister veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is said to be at its thinnest?

*Mwahahaha*!

Oh!!!

I was expecting to see Star Trekkin' and The Birdie Song mentioned.

Truly terrifying songs.

I think that this tune has a brooding feel to it.

It’s Birth of Liquid Plejades by Tangerine Dream, from their 1972 album Zeit (contains strobe like effects in the video):

Mama by Genesis is disturbing and I've always thought the Phil Collins "oh, oh, ohhhhh" very creepy like he's possessed or something.

Siouxsie & The Banshees: Nightshift (all about Jack The Ripper/Yorkshire Ripper whom was still not caught in '81) infact, the whole album by them JUJU is one long halloween fest! Theres even a track called Halloween...

sOFT cELL: Martin, uses vocal snippets from the same movie....

Kate Bush: Get Out Of My House

Scott Walker : Tilt whole album - its umm, an experience....

Thin Lizzy: Killer On The Loose (again, I think this was written about The Yorkshire Ripper, and its a gr8 heavy rock song, but the material & Lynotts spoken parts still gives me the heebeegeebees)

Death metal is just noise. Doesn't scare me, its all panto.

Just to add, the soundtracks to Jaws & Psycho win hands down! Jerry Goldsmiths original score to Alien is pretty eerie too. They ALL fulfilled their briefs!

Frankie Teardrop by Suicide. Jesus that song is f!!!ing brutal!

Pretty much anything by Slipknot. The sound they make is pretty horrifying in itself, so you may think 'Meh, it's all just meaningless screaming', but the lyrics themselves are suprisingly deep and have more meaning and emotion than most bands can muster. It's just they also tend to be pretty f*cking grim. I'm a big fan.

'The Boiler' by The Specials with Rhoda Dakar.

We're not really talking Halloween with any of these songs though, are we? Nothing supernatural or otherworldly here.

I didn't actually know that. I assumed it was about the unethical sexual practices of a mortuary assistant.

Siouxsie is such an under-rated lyricist.

"Night Shift"

Only at night time I see you
In darkness I feel you
A bride by my side -- I'm inside many brides
Sometimes I wonder...
What goes on in your mind, always silent and kind
Unlike the others...
F**k the mothers kill the others
F**k the others kill the mothers
I'll put it out of my mind because...
I'm out of my mind with you
In heaven and hell with you...

My Night Shift sisters
Await your nightly visitor
They don't bother me
No they don't bother me

The cold marble slab submits at my feet
With a neat dissection...
Looking so sweet to me -- please come to me
With your cold flesh -- my cold love
Hissing -- not kissing
A happy go lucky chap -- always dressed in black
He'll come to you, he'll come to you

My Night Shift sisters
With your nightly visitor
A new vocation in life
My love with a knife

F**k the mothers kill the others
F**k the others kill the mothers
I'll put it out of my mind because...
I'm out of my mind with you
In heaven and hell with you...

Here's the best version of Voodoo Dolly, beginning with Eve White/Eve Black to lull you into a false sense of security. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvgVqOL9mEA

This is also at least a bit scary. Marilyn Manson - The Nobodies

"Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. How three notes can be so scary is quite amazing.

King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man surely deserves to be in here, although I can't find a version on YouTube that hasn't been totally destroyed my some self-styled, bedroom mix 'artist'.

Ah yes, Eve White Eve Black that spretty disturbing too, and yep, get past the visual appeal of Siouxsie & there is an amazing lyricist as was Severin.

A Touching Display by Wire is absolutely terrifying if played very loud when on acid.

I always listen to Pornography (album) by The Cure on Halloween. It's like listening to a man descend into madness - bloody good album too.

Another creepy song to me is Climbing up the Walls by Radiohead. But I think that song is about someone who has already gone mad.

Check out some Dark Techno if you want to add to your playlist. It's a veritable treasure chest of horror music.
