As much as people rule it out on here, genre does play apart too, hence why the safe bland winners are always picked because it unites people's tastes more than say Honey G will.

only in your imagination do people rule out genres on here, its quite obvious that people not doing MoR stuff are not going to be as popular with a saturday night prime time TV audience tuning in to watch a light entertainment TV show

as i have stated to you on many an occasion that if you are doing something that isn't MoR then you have to be exceptional to get viewers to notice you, and we never see anyone on these shows who is exceptional, let alone someone from outside MoR

The problem is that the people who keep voting for these MOR acts are not investing in their music after the show is over so it just makes the whole thing a waste of time.

I'm having a think and the only winner who could realistically be considered anything other than MOR or pop is James Arthur with a possible argument being made for Alexandra.

It seems to be what the show and much of the audience want to see on a Saturday night and I have no idea now why anyone with any idea about their own identity wants to go on there, apart from if they go in with their eyes wide open and just want the exposure.

In all the years this show has been going, I've not purchased a single recording by any act that has been on there and I'm pretty sure I'm in the majority as seeing it as a light entertainment show to talk about rather than an actual talent show

The way the panel voted just proved they needed her gone ASAP.

Not only was she one of the best vocalists but also one of the most likeable. Set up from the start.

the thing that gets me is people who proclaim to be serious about music still think the X Factor is the place to watch for new talent when its patently obvious that the acts we get on the x factor are ones looking for a short cut to fame

to me if someone wants to discover and support new talent then they should be getting out to small venues and looking for the acts that are doing things the hard way and trying to achieve success through their own talent and their own material rather than doing karaoke on a reality TV show

obviously she wasn't or she wouldn't have been in the sing-off in the first place for the judges to vote her off ...

That's what many thousands of acts are already doing, and lots of them have more talent than what we see on here, but without the backing or exposure most of them never see the light of day which is why some come on here to at least get some exposure to a wider audience.

To be honest I've seen some years where there's been some exceptional non-MOR acts and they still lose to some shocking people.

Series 4 had Leon beat Rhydian remember, the public will literally spite anyone that's got a bit of character to them just because they don't like that style, and that's how MOR always wins.

Alex is probably the one exception, and she was given some very average material for her first album which could and should have been so much better.

Relly did have a good voice but her problem was she looked like a backing singer singing these songs as she didn't show any real passion or connect to any of the songs she was given. She has sung songs which she could have showed some connection to, has she hasn't been given pop songs. The only bit of emotion she showed was the last line of her save me song, but that was nothing to do with the song, but because she was upset she might be going home.

In respect of being given the wrong songs. She is not Emily, a 20 year old girl, who is probably very easily swayed, she is a woman who should have shown a bit of backbone if she felt that she was being given the wrong songs by Sharon, who is barely even there. Some singers on this show work in collaboration with their mentors and the producers and decide to together what song to sing. It is a once in a life time opportunity, so if you stand by and be made to sing songs that don't suit you, then I'm afraid it is your fault,

Totally disagree with this. All of the contestants are told what they have to sing and have no choice in the matter.

i disagree - In the past a lot of the acts have said they chose their own songs - Ryan Lawrie said it this week and the VT showed him trying a variety of songs and then he said he was glad he picked that song as it was the only song he felt suited him with a guitar. I am sure they have to work with a list of songs, due to licensing etc, but it has been said many times over the years, usually when one of the judges is saying the song was good or bad, the relevant judge, usually Louis says, they picked it themselves.

Betty i really would love to be able to watch the show with the same belief that you have that what you see/hear on the show is genuine, sadly i know better.

If an act "gets a backbone" and starts digging their heels in over song choice or styling the only thing they can be certain of is being buried by the production team and very quickly!!
Most contestants are all too aware of this and tow the line!
"Choosing a song" is subjective if they are given a list of three to choose from or even two then effectively it could be said to be their choice doesn't mean they are singing the style of music or genre of music they want or anything even close!!

I don't think any of them get to pick the genre based on the ridiculous themes they insist on using every year, I do think the likes of James Arthur, Mason Noise, Sean Miley Moore, , Fleur East, Lauren Murray, Only the young (started picking their own songs after a few weeks), going back further to people like Cher lloyd, Misha B. I am sure there are restrictions, but they definitely had more input.

BiB - that's just it though, a shocking number of contestants don't have any idea about their own identity. So many of them don't even seem to be particularly knowledgeable about music, let alone be fans of it. It's kinda forgivable for the younger ones to an extent, but for anyone over the age of 18 to only have knowledge of your Whitneys and your Mariahs or whatever is in the top 20 that particular week is unforgivable IMO.

Of course, then you have those who do have an idea of their own identity, but are willing to sell it up the river for the sake of a solitary number 3 placing and a subsequent career appearing in other people's VTs
