The race to the bottom continues with more stations switching to 32K DAB+. It's all about the quantity!

BBC locals AM switch off starts in phases. More regional simulcasting. More BBC cost cutting measures introduced or announced. R1 budget cut?

Further Cumbria, Mid Wales DAB and possibly more of Scotland expansion plans published.

If de-regulation happens next year, Global start regionalising or nationalising more shows on Heart & Capital. Closing some studios.

Local multiplexes remain fairly empty (wasn't that rollout worth it!?) because minimuxes start becoming the new norm. Which is great, as long as you live near a big town.

RadioDNS picks up traction.

More community stations close.

Ad revenue falls due to economic slowdown.

Bauer pull or (convert to DAB+) Absolute 70s and CR from DAB where contractually possible.

Now Digital website gets updated.

Digital listening hits the 50% mark, but Parliament don't invoke a switchover date due to Brexit negotiations taking centre stage.

UKRD expand.

Trial London is one of the minimuxes which closes after the trial, either morphing in to one of the smaller London zones or ceasing for a few months.

the global empire will fall (hopefully)
dab will continue to limp on with still no sign of an fm switch off
more community / local stations will start and fail
am will still continue

- Nick Grimshaw leaves the breakfast show in December 2017, replaced by Greg James who starts in Jan 2018

- Scott Mills moves to weekend breakfast show, around June

- Matt Edmondson moves to weekday afternoons around June

Interesting thought! Similar to what SCA is doing with lots of Top 40 stations in Australia.

I did wonder how Bauer might respond to the money-saving opportunities of any deregulation on local production, given that neither Kiss nor Magic would quite work as replacements for their City 1 stations.

I cant see the Bauer city 1 Scottish stations getting rebranded as they are performing well but the English stations I think could get rebranded.

I don't think there's going to be a great deal of change in national sports radio during 2017 as most of the major national radio rights deals have been tied up for the next few years.

I think the one major radio rights deal up for grabs - to the British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand - will be won by Radio 5 Live, after talkSPORT had exclusive commentary rights to the 2013 tour. I'd love to be proven wrong on this, as I thought TS did a superb job of covering the Australia tour and their sister station talkSPORT 2 provides regular commentaries on the Premiership, but given their lack of interest in rights to the last Rugby World Cup and the cancellation of the long-running rugby show on their main station, I think 5 Live will make a bigger play than them for these rights.

Also, I would not be surprised if Stan Collymore has become a semi-regular co-commentator and occasional 606 cover host on Radio 5 Live by the time the 2016/17 football season is out. He made his return to 606 after eight years away at talkSPORT last weekend.

Portsmouth DAB mini-mux will increase to 136 services, including 'Finance 247', 'Sport 247', 'Wind Speed 247' and also 'Pollen Count 247' (June-August only).

Other new stations will include 'Portsmouth Memories', 'Jazz Portsmouth', 'Angel Portsmouth', 'Portsmouth City Radio', 'Express Extra' and 'Portsmouth BMW Driver Radio' aimed at all 3 of the city's BMW drivers with DAB+ radios in their car.

Will that be the one that won't let you know what direction it is taking?

But they will still resolutely refuse to provide a classic pop Gold like station.

Not Jan 2018 for Greg James but he could take an extended break from Radio 1 during the Ashes and then take over in the Spring.

Global rebrands Smooth Extra as Smooth Gold and launches on AM in London and DAB in parts of the UK
Global will keep Smooth Extra as it is as it done well in the Rajars as it brings Smooth to areas of the UK which don't have a local Smooth.

Global has spare capacity on Digital One for one radio station this will be most likely used for Smooth Christmas from November 2016 then in January 2017 either Gold or the rebranded Gold as Smooth Gold launches across the UK. Smooth Gold will continue to play the same music as Gold and have popular features like The Golden Hour, Seventies Saturday, Sixties Sunday and will not simulcast any of Smooth Radio.

Obviously you have not read Global's @smoothradio twitter page then or the discussion here on DS, as it has been mentioned that Smooth Christmas will not be returning this year but instead Smooth Extra will be featuring quite a few Christmas songs.

As for Smooth Gold, well it would be nice to have a national Gold station back on DAB as I liked Capital Gold as well as Classic Gold and then Gold and Gold seems such as waste with only one live presenter.

So why not close Gold and turn Smooth Extra into Smooth Gold and bring back live presenters, having said that as I have said before, the former Magic North stations now The Greatest Hits as well as Magic London which is national on DAB as well as Smooth and Smooth Extra are as good as Gold stations although The Greatest Hits play new music as well.

I think I can see the same changes coming to Radio 1 with Greg James taking over Breakfast as well as Tony Blackburn taking over Sounds of the Sixties on BBC Radio 2.

To be honest I always thought Tony would move on from Pick of the Pops at some point to take over Sounds of the Sixties.

I can also see the BBC closing down some of its MW frequences as well as maybe an expansion say to at least 85% announced for Sound Digital taking place early to Spring 2018.

Cheesy FM will fail and close. But maybe not before they advertise for another jock who they will never actually take on,thereby totally wasting the time of any professional who bothered to apply,

I doubt that Bauer would rebrand Radio City. The name Radio City is very well known throughout the Merseyside area.
Neither would Bauer rebrand any of its Scottish stations. Names such as Radio Clyde and Radio Forth are well known to Scottish listeners.

No chance Bauer will do anything to the Scottish stations. They are all performing quite well. I cant even see them scrapping the local 10 - 2 shows anytime soon.

Seem to remember similar arguments a few years ago.
"There's no way they will rebrand Trent FM"
"They won't change the GWR name"
"Ashley loves Galaxy, he won't ditch that"
Etc etc...

Indeed. After all they seem to do what they want with little or no argument from their lovely little pals at OFCOM.

Or, could they scrap the current format and roll Kiss out?
