On their website Arqiva say there are 35 transmitters left to complete the local DAB rollout (they have launched 185 of the 220). They say the other 35 will be on in 2017.
is there a link?

Tony Blackburn for SOTS would be a great BBC swansong for this legendary broadcaster.
I'd prefer Tony going back to Pick of the Pops and Paul Gambaccini going to SOTS.

Gambo's got the right kind of musical knowledge to do justice to SOTS.

It's time one of the R2 'daytime' presenters moved on - I know many on here would push for Steve Wright, but my personal preference would be for Jeremy Vine to move on to be replaced by Paddy O'Connell.

Alternatively, get rid of Evans and have Sara Cox as a permanent replacement (one can but hope).

I think Brian Matthew will retire from Sounds of the Sixties, sadly. Either Tony Blackburn or Tim Rice (who's currently standing in for Brian) will replace him (I think it's more likely to be Blackburn though, to be honest).

I think Sara Cox is favourite for a new daytime slot. I think they will be looking to get a woman on the daytime on Radio 2. There has not been a woman on a weekday daytime since Debbie Thrower in 1998.

Does Radio 2 need a lunchtime show which is current affairs based this may put some of the older Radio 1 listeners staying with the BBC and switching to Radio 2. The older Radio 1 listeners who is finding the station now too young for them may find Radio 2 too old for them and drift off to a commercial station.

The older Radio 1 listener will used to music and entertainment through the day and may be put off by current affairs show discussing topics which are heavy compared to the other output on the station. The Jeremy Vine show could be replaced with a 15 minute news bulletin through the day like Newsbeat on Radio 1. If listeners want current affairs they can tune to Radio 4 or Radio 5 Live.

The daytime schedule could be refreshed to reflect this:

12.00 After Midnight with Janice Long
Fri Alex Lester
04.00 Vanessa Feltz
06.00 Chris Evans
09.00 Ken Bruce
11.30 Sara Cox including 15 minute news at 13.00
14.00 Steve Wright
17.00 - 19.00 Simon Mayo

Over on Radio 1 Scott Mills will make to switch to Weekend Breakfast, with Dev moving to Weekend Afternoons between 13.00 - 16.00 and Alice Levine taking over the weekday afternoon show from Scott Mills.

Scott would addition start to make the transition to Radio 2 by covering for weekday presenters like Ken Bruce and Steve Wright.

They are not allowed to scrap the lunchtime current affairs show, it's a service licence requirement:

In addition to its regular news bulletins, Radio 2 should broadcast each weekday an accessible current affairs programme in daytime covering topics such as consumer affairs, finance, the family, education, health and disability, and offering listeners the opportunity to respond by phone or online

Another suggestion - As the IRN contract comes up next year-. The Vodafone Big Top 40 bows out and relaunches under a new name and possibly new time (depending if Capital goes national and allows to move the chart to Friday drivetime).

Why isn't Shazam stats used in the chart show? There are stations in Australia that have a daily top 10 most shazamed songs of the day.

Because charts are pointless in the current age of streaming, YouTube etc?

Although I would say they became pointless when GWR first started doing a daily chart counting down all 30 songs in their playlist.....

Yes this would be a good idea if Capital goes national the only thing standing in the way now is the local / regional Drivetime requirement which is stopping The Big Top 40 competing with BBC Radio 1 who have started to The Official UK Top 40 on Friday Drivetime.

If Capital goes national there will be no requirements for local Breakfast / Drive leaving Global to put the The Big Top 40 on Friday Drivetime in competition with BBC Radio 1.

If this happens it will encourage people to listen to Digital Radio as the broadcast on local FM stations will stop as they cannot broadcast a network show during Drive. People will need to tune to Digital Radio if there is no FM coverage for Capital in their area.

If this happens Marvin Humes will move from the Late Show on Capital to Drive. Marvin would host Drive Mon - Thurs and then The Big Top 40 on Fridays between 16.00 - 19.00

The idea would suggest that it could be the end of the "original capital network chart show" as global might not renew the irn contract and let Bauer take it on with their version which could remain on Sunday (as they'll need to keep drivetime?)

My idea might be daft as Global make money on outside sources taking the Sunday chart on.

The chart makes too much money from Vodaphone for it to be axed.

I agree, Capital and Heart will go fully national when rules are relaxed next year. Richard Park has never made a secret about his desire to do this. He even said in an interview with the Guardian (I think) back when Heart was rolled out nationwide in 2009 that in an ideal world he'd network Jamie Theakston nationally.

I think Capital will go national 24/7 first (probably by this time next year), with Heart following in early 2018.

Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I don't think it's in Heart's interests to go all-national. Capital, yes, but Heart might just shift local hours to off-peaks, networking breakfast and drive but perhaps keeping afternoons for local hours?

Predictions for 2017:

Absolutely no chance of Capital and Heart networking the same programming nationwide across the network.
(Ofcom's new rules won't relieve local commitments - only music formats, and local S&P still makes the £££)

Gold still won't go on Digital One.

They'll continue to be new DS posts about minor schedule changes and relief presenters on Heart (still just three people will care)

They'll continue to be posts sniggering that a station failed to do a network opt on one Thursday at 6am or run a local jingle in the chart (still just two people will care)

Sums up standard music FM, noone really cares, apart from those in the radio playground, who move a fader or two and press 'next' on a keypad.

Gary Vincent leaves magic or moves to weekends. Harriet Scott takes over as magic prepares to implement more female presenters to the schedules

the lovely Sarah kennedy will return to late evening Radio 2 with her ''my pouting pussy show'' it will include pictures of listeners cats....it will work great on the tranny!! instead of waking up to the lovely Sarah we can fall asleep to her velvety voice and hacking cough
she will have a new segment called ''online shopping at sainsbugs'', listeners will be able to call in to guess ''whats in Sarah's basket'' and win a month's supply of felix if they win.

the second hour of the show will be called ''is anybody there'' NO, that's not a reference to the listening figures but instead her seance segment in which she will call forward the spirits of Terry Wogan, Jimmy Young and Tanqueray...it will be like days of old with mirthy chit chat about taupe sweaters and days at Henley regatta.

the third hour, yes its a long show, will be her race relations hour sponsored by UKIP....this hour will be called ''i've never heard of Didier drogba'' and will include a listener participation phone in for ''spot the coloured gentleman''...think spot the ball !!
at the top of the hour we will finish with a thrash metal tune and Sarah will merrily hum her way through it.
of course, there might be the odd evening when the lovely Sarah is too tired to turn up so Mo Dutta is being brought out of mothballs as emergency cover.
by this time next year the Sony radio awards will be flying in.

Merry Christmas one and all
