People with down syndrome are surely still capable of having a relationship. I don't really see what would be that controversial about it outside of the oh good he's not normal how dare he live a normal life brigade.

..... What if got serious and she wanted kids..... What if people said she was taking advantage of him

Maybe it's actually better that someone without downs syndrome dates someone with down syndrome, at least when he gets older Gemma can look after him rather than him having to go into care. I'd hope they'd portray in that Gemma sees something in Alex other people might not and wants to foster a relationship with him rather than her taking advantage of him.

Who might they be then? I can't imagine anyone suggesting someone with down's syndrome shouldn't have a normal life, yet you claim there's a brigade of them?

So your saying that Gemma should take pity on him and look after him for the rest of her life.... Why should she do that for the rest of the life it's not her responsibility

Silly Silly me. I've just realised who Alex is. I kept on thinking it was Michelle's boy the one who has left. I also wondered why people where mentioning him.
I don't think Cathy would let it happen because she is very overprotective and probably wouldn't trust Gemma IMO. But I could be wrong.

If you mean Michelle, Steve's wife, she and Peter were together - briefly - when Steve left Michelle for Becky.
