Clapping during the dance

Something else that's really obvious to me this series, the amount of clapping during the dances.

I know it's always been done but it now seems over the top.

Call me old fashioned, but I thought it was polite to wait for something to finish and then clap?

It also drowns out the great singing and music from the band.

It would be better if they clapped on the off beat, not every beat.

It must be off putting for the celebrities! They've had less than a week to learn an entirely new dance so it must take a lot of concentration on the night to remember everything they've been taught. I know I'd forget things if people were clapping non stop whilst I was trying to concentrate!

I'm fairly sure it was Danny who said on ITT after his Paso Doble he couldn't hear the music because of the clapping so he had to just guess when to come in.

It must be off putting to the dancers... as well as the moving scenery on the dancefloor... it would put me off.

I hate the b****y props cluttering up the dance floor. I sometimes wonder if they do that because the celeb is so useless the can't move around the floor, so they clutter everywhere up so they can't without crashing into an ornamental love seat or over sized children's toy.

Clapping on the wrong beat has been mentioned before. Surely they can get some BBC numpty to start the audience off on the right beat?

Harry Connick had a way of fooling audiences into clapping on 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3, by playing a bar of 5.

I've posted this before, but worth seeing as it's quite clever. It's called "Rhythmic displacement"

Even Justin Bieber can dictate an audience of thousands how to clap on the right beat so I'm sure someone at the BBC could manage it. It's offputting for me and all I do is sit at home with my feet up!

Not only that it also makes your hands ache to clap on every beat!

It can annoy but for me the clapping while a guest sings is just ignorant.

Clapping the dancers while the guest sings is just plain rude.

I blame all those BBC people in the audience.

The BBC are often out of step with the rest of the population.

(those who think the BBC can do no wrong, before they rush to their defence, please understand it was meant as a joke, but I assumed everyone would have the intelligence to get it, without me having to add a daft smiley)

I like the thought behind it, like 'we love this and we want to join in', but it annoys me when I'm dancing or watching, the music is part of the dance and I want to hear. I do musicals so I get the clapping thing a lot, it's confusing and its going to be worse on Strictly when your closer to the audience than the band. Some people can handle it tho and lots of the celebs might have had experience of having clapping at the wrong time.

For me it's not the clapping on the wrong beat that I hate most (though it does annoy me), it's the whooping and hollering they do anytime the dancers do anything even vaguely interesting. When Louise and Kevin did their VW a few weeks ago to an incredibly beautiful rendition of Hallelujah by the band and singers I thought it could have been a real moment, only to be yanked out of it by the arseholes in the audience cheering every time they changed direction or something. And yes I know it's the floor manager's fault for telling them to do it in the mistaken belief it adds "excitement".

That gives you an idea of how little intelligence the BBC think has the average person, that they will allow themselves to be manipulated. Maybe I'm wrong and some of those who attend are like that and respond as requested?

Are these numpty floor managers, also the ones who encourage the audience to clap on the wrong beat, because they don't know any different?

How about the celebrities who have just danced mark the audience on their clapping during the dance? Then get Craig to say something nasty if they are not up to par.

What irritates me is the inane whooping and shouting when the singers are on and a pair of dancers appear.

All the clapping, whooping and over use of props really grates with me. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to enjoy the dances. I wish the audience would wait til the end and show their appreciation then, so we can enjoy the music etc without all the hoo-ha!

Have to say I agree. A little while ago I watched the BBC strictly proms, this was so much better, in my opinion, as the music could be heard, the dancers appreciated and the applause was at the end of the item. Wish strictly could take a leaf out of this programmes book.

The difference being that in the Prom concert, I doubt there was a "warm up man" getting the audience worked up before the programme went live, (unless you can count Katie Derham) and neither were there BBC floor managers "making a nuisance of themselves," who seem to be doing their best to make the dances on Strictly less enjoyable for viewers.

Something my Mum said (before she stopped watching (anything on TV)), and I agree with her, is that guest singers/vocalists are invited on to the Sunday show, but they're stuck at the back. As soon as a pair of dancers come on to 'dance to it', the audience jump in and applaud/cheer (I agree that it's probably because someone has prompted them to) and continue to show their appreciation throughout the dance. Mum suggests (again, viably) that this is unfair and disrespectful to the singers...

[Edit] Apologies - I've just read the thread properly, and one or two of you above have said the same thing - totally agree
