Hi guys, not ported my number over in a few years, can you advise the following ..

How long does it take to port over a number these days?

Do I need to give notice? I am with EE and plan to switch to VF. Do I just get a PAC code off EE and give that too Vodafone and not worry about it or will EE charge me if I don't give notice? BTW, I am now out of contract with EE.

On most (all?) mobile firms if you give the new provider the porting code by 5pm they can do it the following working day - the number may be out of action for an hour or two during the port.

USING (not getting) the PAC cancels the contract with the old provider. Even though you are out of a long-term contract with EE there may be a "30 days notice to terminate" clause. If so giving EE notice as soon as possible would cut down their final charge to however many days were left!

Using a PAC effectively terminates the old account so you won't be charged after using the PAC, the port only takes a day to process (supply the PAC on working day 1 and it will port on working day 2) but you're still liable for your 30 day notice period.

You have a choice, get your PAC (which effectively starts your notice period) and only use it on day 27-28 (and hope there are no issues with the port) or just use it when you get it and you'll be paying for 2 contracts for the first month.

Well you usually pay a month in advance on a mobile contract, so if anything you may get a credit for any time that you haven't used.

Thanks all, sounds like the best option is to get the PAC code, wait perhaps 3 weeks-ish and then port over, at least that way I have a day or two grace if there are issues and will minimse paying for both contracts at the same time.
