With more cast changes in Hollyoaks, it hardly feels like the same show as when it started. I only really watched Brookside in the last 10 years but missed Hollyoaks for over 13 years. So, in terns of my own viewing Hollyoaks is not as familiar.

Hollyoaks is awful, almost as awful as modern Coronation Street.

I think that the secret to Hollyoaks' longevity is that it doesn't try to be like the other soaps on UK TV, nor is it expected to be. It's the closest thing that we have in the UK to an American or Aussie soap in that it's mostly populated by beautiful people and some of the storylines and twists are just absolutely bonkers. There's stuff that goes on in HO that people would be up in arms about if it were happening on a show like EE or Corrie. But because HO is regarded as a smaller soap, it has more leeway when it comes to storylines like it's multiple serial killers. It's a sensationalist soap and people know it is.
Brookside on the other hand, wasn't a sensationalist soap to begin with and when it became one, it alienated viewers. Of course, it did nothing that the other big soaps aren't doing these days in terms of stunts and shock storylines but it was ahead of it's time and therefore ridiculed. During a period when the most dramatic stunts to happen on Corrie or EE were car crashes and fires, over on Brookside Close, nightclubs were being bombed and people were being killed off by a mysterious virus. |

![]() Brookside in it's day was superior to every other soap (I wasn't around to watch it obviously but from old episodes seen nothing else comes close to it). When it lost it's way it was a huge shame but at least fans can look back on the good years of it, rather than it still being on TV and having that memory trashed. |

I do too! It's been great since summer and has really turned itself around. I do find it annoying when Hollyoaks is treated as the junk soap (it may have been at one point but it's not now) because they have and will continue to pull it out the bag when necessary and produce some excellent episodes.

It's my favourite soap, it's had and still has fantastic sls and they have great actresses/actors and just like any soap not everything is perfect but currently I am really enjoying it. It's the soap I look forward to and I rarely miss an episode.

Same here. There always seems to be something going on and they have/had some really strong actors in the show, and new characters so you don't get bored with it. Over the years they have rivalled the big three soaps and have even surpassed them but it does get treated like a joke or the poor relation even though it's nothing like that.

I agree, out of 'big' soaps I watch (corrie and EE) I find HO more gripping and interesting. Imagine HO celebrating their 30th, I would love that.

Hollyoaks was at its best 2010-2013 when Brendan was in it. I'd watch E4 eps and then re-watch on Channel 4 the next day just to see Brendan again.
Why won't Emmett Scanlan get his head out of his arse and return he's hardly making it big with what he's doing at the moment. A two-bit part in The Fall where he's just being Brendan being a cop

Brookside tore it's reputation to tatters in it's final couple of years. Not even HO at it's worst has been as bad as oh, a killer virus from a pizza parlour, and i could keep going...
Brookside was a mess in its final few years but Channel 4 didn't help either by constantly changing the days/times. Even the omnibus which was always Saturdays at 5pm started moving to silly times, often with no notice. |

To be fair the killer virus was 1995, about 8 years before it ended.

The early years of Brookside will never be topped by anything Hollyoaks has to offer imo.
It was dreadful towards the end, though. |
