I thought the same and assumed it was because he's self conscious about his hair. I agree that the hat looks ridiculous and in fact it draws more attention to his hair. No shame in a receding hairline, he should just roll with it.

He does wear the hat quite a bit, I think when his hair hasn't been gelled down, but he doesn't wear it in the studio.

when you look at training vid for charleston he is wearing hair longer this year and has it gelled in on a Saturday - think the hat is to cover hair when it is messy
